Here is what people are saying about the One Moonlit Night
"Vicar's Daughter and the Dark Earl" | 2008-07-21 |

Olivia Sherwood has fallen on hard times. Her father was murdered a year before by a gypsy and her sister, who witnessed the murder, has gone blind. Olivia is forced to work at the home of the Earl of Ravenwood, despite being a gentlewoman. She has been hired to work because the new Earl is coming to visit and the house needs to be prepared - as does the village. It's well known that the Earl is the bastard son of the previous Earl and a gypsy woman and rumours of his raking in London have reached the village.
When Olivia meets Dominic St Bride she discovers he is a complex man but perhaps not the devil he has been painted. As she gets to know him more she finds a great deal to like about him. Unfortunately for Dominic there are those in the village who want to drive him out. Can the villagers get past their antipathy towards the gypsies, even when some children are kidnapped?
This was an enjoyable read, despite the fact that most of the ideas and scenes have been explored before in this kind of novel. As well as Olivia's romance with Dominic there was a sub-romance with Olivia's blind sister which was rather touching. There were occasional lapses of historicity, particularly within the dialogue, and Olivia's behaviour was sometimes rather surprising in a woman brought up in the way she must have been, particularly with regard to her understanding of what was acceptable behaviour, but it was still a good read with a few insights into the gypsy life.

This is my second Samantha James book. I didn't know it was a re-issue. This is obviously an early effort. To be honest I found it boring.
******MAY BE SPOILERS BELOW. READ AT YOUR WILL*******
First off Dominic frustrated me by constantly complaining about being half gypsy and being seen by others that way. When he had made up his mind that he wanted to be the earl, he didn't follow a few rules that I would think would make him look better in the eyes of his servants and the townspeople. Mainly showing too much interest in Olivia. Having an affair with a servant after just arriving, ignoring the gentlemanly conduct rules about men and women, peers and servants would have hurt his reputation even more.
You can't tell me that no one in Ravenwood Hall suspected that something was going on when they spent most evenings in the same room. Discretion was not in Dominic's nature.
I, also, didn't see the attraction or love between Olivia and Dominic. They didn't have anything in common. *********
I recommend this author's more recent books.

"Enjoyable, not necessarily memorable" | 2008-02-12 |

| This was an enjoyable quick read. I went back and forth with these characters though. I just couldn't understand why the author didn't better explain the heroine's feelings with more depth. Ok, her father was killed by a gypsy, but then she seems to trust the hero but not enough to really love him...why? If she sees he's a great guy, then why the fear of his being a gypsy...explain the fear that remains. The prejudice just seemed to go on and on for the heroine even after she likes the guy. Also, I wasn't sure why he fell in love with her...was it just that immediate feeling, because she seemed to spend so much time avoiding him. I did like the hero's belief in fate and in his conviction that he was supposed to be with Olivia. |

"Very romantic read - a tortured man can find true love!" | 2005-11-13 |

| Great premise - a 1/2 gypsy with a difficult past tries to come home to the estate his father never wanted him to have anything to do with. Him being a bastard with a gypsy Dominic faces being in the 1/2 world of not really being part of the aristocracy and not accepted anymore by the gypsies with the death of his mother. So he comes home to Ravenswood and tries to make it his home. Fear and contempt he is faces with in the village and by his staff. The very first nite of his return he meets Olivia in the moonlight with his fiercesome dog Lucifer and immediately the connection between the two is made. Olivia thinks she hates all gypsies because her vicar father was killed by one the year before - it also caused the blindness of her sister. However Olivia who is part of Dominic's staff soon realizes this man is nothing as the rumors appear. He seems kindly, he treats her with great respect, he offers to help her with her sisters blindness, he soon saves the life of 2 drownding boys. He takes her to meet the gypsies that have settled on nearby land all in the hopes of showing her that they are not evil as she thinks. It is beautiful to watch these two fall in love. There are a few challenges when Dominic thinks she is actually in love with another named Robert - but unlike other books where this would cause them to be kept apart Dominic always seems to challenge Olivia with his doubts and the air is cleared. At the same time unbeknownst to Olivia - her sister Emily is falling in love with her own gypsy Andre - but she does not know he is a gypsy because she is blind. Her blindness not permanent she finds her sight right after they have made love and then she is devistated to realize his deception by not telling her he was a gypsy. The ending is a beautiful way of these two couples finding their way back to each other while evil forces are trying to eliminate the dreadful gypsies from the area. A very moving love story for both Olivia & Dominic and Emily & Andre. The story encompasses both well! |

"A Truly Romantic Story" | 2004-11-25 |

This is one of my favorite romance novels to date. This was the first Samantha James book that I have read and it will not be my last! Olivia and Dominic were well developed as indivduals and together they had fantastic chemistry. I dislike weak female heroines and really dislike overbearing male heros. Olivia had a quite strenght and it showed in her ability to live a hopeful life after suffering so much sorrow. Dominic being 1/2 gypsy and treated so cruelly by his father and society desperately wanted love even though he didn't know it until he met Olivia. Minor intrigues added to the story as well as Olivias sister Emily's romance with Andre didn't distract from the main story. The love scenes between Dominic and Olivia had just the right amount of romance and sensuality. Sizzle without being crude.
This book is a keeper for my library. Sensuality rating 4 out of 5 |
