Here is what people are saying about the The Marriage Lesson
5 Star Rating  "One of my favorites!"2010-02-18

The Marriage Lesson is one of my favorite Victoria Alexander novels. The dialogue between the hero and heroine make you laugh out loud at times. Even months later, the reader will be remembering the climax of the book. Plus this begins the entire Effington family. And, you can see Thomas again as a father in his's son's own romanace story.

Loved it, loved it!!! it was too funny. The hero was so adorable and funny with his poems, he reminds me of the tyype of guy you want to throttle and kiss all at the same time . He tried to be so proper and do the right thing by his ward, but around Marianne, he just seemed to loose his sense of propriety. I thought they were both very likable main characters. I have never have a book that made me laugh out loud so much, the last chapters were especially hilarious. What a wonderful story!!!!

THE MARRIAGE LESS is a light enjoyable read! This is the third book of the Effington family.

3 Star Rating  "A light frivolous read"2006-07-07
- Reviewed By theoriginaljfmmb from Canton, GA United States
Let me preface this by saying that I very seldom read romance novels and if I had seen the back cover of this one before I had ordered it, I sincerely doubt that I would have. But that aside, since it arrived, I decided to at least give it a shot. What I found was surprisingly entertaining.

To me there are only a handful of basic plots for a romance novel: 2 people who don't realize they love each other and spend most of the book trying to figure out why they're acting oddly; 2 people one in love with the other, the other not realizing they're in love with the other the one wishing the other loved them, the other wondering why they're acting oddly; 2 people madly in love with each other but kept apart by circumstance for most of the book; or 2 people in an arranged marriage who come to love each other. They all have the same ending of a happy monogamous relationship. The "modern" romances all have several soft porn love scenes written with as few anatomical terms as possibly and absolutely no words that would be found in harder porn.

Ms. Alexander hits all of these requisites admirably, but the surprising part is that she writes extremely good dialogue and the rest of the novel is written more from a stage direction or stage set point of view. Although this doesn't make for characters with a great deal of depth, it does carry the characters' personalities nicely and gives the reader a good feel for place and time.

Since romance novels are so formulaic, and we all know the ending when we pick one up, the climax of the novel comes in those scenes leading up to the "happily ever after" ending. Here Ms. Alexander does push her luck just a touch. She writes 3 scenes that are terribly transparent. An 8 year old could probably figure out what is going on. And the 3 scenes are just over kill with everone trying to trick everyone else. She probably could have gotten away with 1 or 2, but the 3 are just way too improvable. Don't want to spoil the plot, so you'll just have to read it yourself to see.

So, my verdict: if I were a romance novel fan, Ms. Alexander would probably be one of my favorites. Since I'm not a romance novel fan, I can say that Ms. Alexnder's novels are a light frivolous read that can be enjoyable.

My star ratings:

One star - couldn't finish the book

Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author

Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.

Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.

Five stars - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

3 Star Rating  "enjoyable, but not exceptional"2006-06-25

The upside: what I enjoyed about this book is that there are some funny scenes, like the scene where Marianne wakes Thomas by emtying a watering can over his head, or the scene where he tries to simulate a Romeo and Juliet encounter but doesn't quite make it to the balcony.... Another plus were the small articles about their (somewhat embellished) relationship that introduce each chapter. They are written by Marianne for a gossip newspaper, anonymously, which gives the story an interesting twist.

The downside: the hero and heroine's feelings are a bit superficial. She doesn't want to marry except for true love, he doesn't believe in it (even though, of course, he is in love). His ignorance over his feelings lasts too long to be quite convincing and she doesn't appear to be too heartbroken when it does not seem to work out.
