Here is what people are saying about the Obsidian Butterfly (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter (Paperback))
3 Star Rating  "I don't think this book was really necessary to the plot of the series"2009-10-08

I need to say I skipped most of the pages. I liked the idea of knowing Edward more. It was very interesting. But, Anita is becoming quite repetitive and without the other two leader characters in the book she is not a strong enough character to make the book interesting.

I think she needs more conflicts that are different than the ones she keeps circulating and repeating in all the books.

These books are wonderful! I'm on the 10th one right now and they just keep getting better! Most authors start to dissipate when they do a long series like this one, but there's always something new and exciting in each book she writes that will keep you turning the pages and begging for the next one. You never know what she'll come up with. It's amazing! Laurell K. Hamilton is my new favorite author.

4 Star Rating  "Edward's Story!"2009-09-03
- Reviewed By User: A2K12DD58JZRU9
I was definitely excited to learn that Obsidian Butterfly is based around Anita's comrade and preternatural bounty hunting bad ass, Edward. Edward was introduced in the first installment, Guilty Pleasures, where he comes across to the readers as a man that loves and lives for the thrill of the kill especially if the price is right.

Edward has called Anita in for a favor owed to him from previous events leading to the death of an accomplice by the bullet from her gun. Anita decides that she would rather do what Edward would like than to test who really is the better hunter; knowing its likely she will not be the last (wo)man standing.

Obsidian Butterfly introduces Ted Forrester, aka Edward, and his life as a bounty hunter, family man, and all around likeable guy. Albeit, Edward has Anita believing that its just a facade (as he himself believes it too), but she begins to have her doubts, especially when he drops major news that has her in disbelief and ready to smack some sense into him. We matriculate that Edward is actually having internal quarrels with trying to keep Ted as just an alias and not reality, although he does enjoy testing the boundaries as Ted the family man while trying to still remain Edward the mercenary. He discerns, but tries not to admit, that he longs for Ted's life and both, Anita and himself, conclude that he may have a heart that still beats after all.

I was happy to receive a minuscule break from the love triangle, as I was growing frustrated with Anita and her indecision. Also, how this tale revolves around different kinds of love, loss, and life awakenings. I do miss the boys, but I am mirthful for the chance at getting to know Edward and his life.

3 Star Rating  "Not one of my fav anita blake books"2009-06-11

Im a huge anita blake fan, I own and have re read all of the books. I don't even mind that the ending books become all about sex. However, this book was a little hard to get through. Anita being pissy about Edwards's choice of being with someone with kids get annoying. The fact that she was willing to try and kill him over it was worse. The story didn't move as fast as some of the others either. It just wasn't my favorite in the series. If you want to read the whole series then I would say to read it so your not totally lost later on , as you do learn things that keep going through the next 10 books.

4 Star Rating  "not as good as Blue Moon, but still a great read in a great series"2009-05-01
- Reviewed By powderedtoast
While Blue Moon brought some shocks and surprises in Anita's love life and brought to the surface more of her humanity, Butterfly takes a complete departure from her normal setting.

Edward calls in his favor that he felt Anita owed him after she killed his 'backup' in self defense from several books ago. This favor takes her to New Mexico where a series of VERY disturbing murders is happening. The cops think it's a person, Edward thinks otherwise and could use Anita's expertise. Upon arriving, Edward has a very shocking surprise for Anita while he lives out his alter ego of Ted Forrester. If you want to know any more of that, you're just going to have to read the book!

While I say this is a departure from what's been developing over the previous books I state that while admitting that yes, there are vampires and yes there are shapeshifters...just not the ones we have been introduced to and that have been developed over the course of the series. Anita has taken a break from both Jean Claude and Richard. In the time line of the series it's been about 6 months since she's seen either of them. That means not only is there no Jean Claude or Richard, there's also no Asher, Damien, Jason, Nathaniel or any of them.

I admit I've grown fond of her interactions and dilemmas involving her two very different 'families'. This book makes mention of some of them from time to time but they don't appear in the book. Maybe that's why, while I enjoyed the book, I didn't enjoy it as much as I have the previous ones. But a departure from the norm is good for any character and I can hope it moves the series onward and upwards.

I still enjoy the character of Anita but that doesn't mean I don't have problems with her. The fact that she's becoming more like Edward, the cold calculating killer is a little disturbing, but she realizes this so all is not lost. She's still a wanton ball buster and she's still a shoot first ask questions later kinda gal, both figuratively and literally speaking. Sometimes she expects everyone to be as tough as her. This is just a sign that she's losing her humanity with all she's gone through over the course of the series. Sometimes her interactions with 'normal' people, while keeping in the spirit of the character she's become, can still just make you want to hate her but that's generally the exception, not the rule. Sometimes you feel as if you want to hate her more often than not but her more human side, the person she was before all the involvement with vampire counsels and lycanthrope pack interactions always comes through and you realize why you like the character in the first place.

Anita's character flaws are what make her interesting and fun to read. Butterfly's no exception. And this one is ACTION packed with some imagery that's downright disturbing to the core.

Another solid book in the series, just a slight departure from what's been building recently. The fact that it's still fun is a testament to how colorful and imaginative a universe Hamilton has created. When a series has run as long as this one (and I know I'm late to the party and have alot more books to read!) it's a true testament to a very good writer.
