Here is what people are saying about the Briar Rose
"Pass on this one" | 2009-08-24 |

| The story is interesting in concept but very watered down to what it could have been. The plot is forced, character development is not only incomplete, but I found the characters dull, flat and one-dimensional. This book had great potential but for me I couldn't finish it. There are many more books worth my time than this one. |

"A story to remember" | 2009-08-04 |

I won't go into a summary of this book, you can find that in the section above, and in many other reviews. What I'll say here is this:
I read this book when I was 12. It moved me deeply, possibly more deeply than anything I'd ever read before. It wasn't that the story was about the Holocaust, I'd already read "Night" and several other WWII books by then, so terrible as that was, it wasn't what really made me cry.
It was the fairy tale her grandmother told, amidst the horror and the pain, the death and the struggle. That kiss, that hope, that life. How the granddaughter searches for those links to her grandmother's, and by extension her own, past.
"Briar Rose" grabbed hold of me, and didn't let go. I can clearly remember finishing the book in my closet in the middle of the night with a shirt pressed against the door crack so no light would give me away to my parents.
If you're looking at this review wondering whether or not to get this book - do it. Let it grab hold of you. More than likely you will not regret your purchase. |

"Hidden Face" | 2009-04-28 |

| Briar Rose by Yolen is one of my favorite books. I have always had a morbid fascination with the Holocaust and this book definitely adds the right amount of it. This was my first book by Yolen and I bounded with Gemma and Rebecca and the bound between them touched me. Yolen twined the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale in with the novel giving the whole story a magical feel but the Holocaust brings us back to reality. On a side note, I never noticed the face behind the barbs until weeks after I read the story and saw the book across the room. |

"an alternate holocaust story" | 2009-04-11 |

| This book is great a great alternative to other holocaust accounts. However, my male students did not like the fairy tale aspect of the book. Some of my younger, and more conservative students, objected to the homosexual references. |

"Interesting Premise, But Not Quite The Fairy Tale As Promised..." | 2009-01-20 |
| - Reviewed By User: A1D5RCOILPC9LX |
| I didn't exactly mean to read this in one sitting, but that is just what happened! This book is loosely based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, but is set in Poland during WWII. The history is tragic and the writing is pretty solid, but there is a definite loss of magic that should be at the heart of every fairy tale - retold or not. Still, I did enjoy it. |
