Here is what people are saying about the Greenland: Nationalism and Cultural Identity in Comperative Perspective (North Atlantic Studies, 1)
"Halway Off Topic" | 2006-10-05 |

I bought this book with the idea that I would be reading about the Greenlandic people, Greenlandic issues, and Greenlandic history. What this book delivered, was something altogether different. Roughly half of the essays that make up this book are on topic. The best of the bunch was Mads Faegteborg's piece on the juxtaposition of local and global politics as experienced in Greenland. Inge Kleivan and Robert Petersen also wrote very good, concise pieces on Greenlandic identity and national symbols. There was also another essay that dealt with localism from the Greenlandic perspective that I liked.
Sadly, these four pieces did not make up for the fact that the other half of the articles came in either off subject entirely, or only tangentially related. Robert Paine wrote a piece on the Saami of Norway that I considered tangentially related, but much better handled in a different forum. There was also a truly awful piece about Linguicism by Tove Skullnabs-Kangas and Robert Phillipson that read more like an indictment of humanity than any kind of serious study of linguistics. There was a "work in progress" on indigenous rights in an article by Frederik Harhoff that wasn't too bad, but existed entirely in the realm of theory and not at all in the realm of Greenland, the North Atlantic, Scandinavia or anywhere else that I could see. Indeed, only Canada is mentioned and only once and not until the second to last paragraph. The same can be said for Uffe Osdtergaard's "Definition of Nation in European Political Thought". His arguments are dead on. His context is just right. His argument is very convincing, but what did the article have to do with Greenland? He spoke mostly about Alsace, somewhat about Scandinavia, and more about Europe as a whole, but I don't think he once mentioned Greenland.
Purchasing this book for information on Greenland or a deeper understanding of that mysterious island and its people will disappoint. That said, the individual articles are quite good in a standalone fashion. Cohesively, they crumble.
