Don't Miss This One !! Tobruk Birth of a Legend... This book is outstanding. The author paints a vivid picture of the Tobruk Fortress & its defenses are descibed in colorfull detail. Written by a Frank Harrison,a British signal-man in the fortress for the durration,it provides an indepth view of the seige of the Fortress of Tobruk in 1941.Detailing the the heroric six month stand by the Austailian 9th Division under command of the outstanding General Moreshead & the eventual breakout by the British 70th Division under command of gritty Brigagadier Willison,it reads like an action novel placing the reader in the command bunker, the stifling heat of the tanks, the filth of the trenches & the freezing temps of the cold desert nights.Supported by the Royal Armour,Artillery & Air Force,it chronicles the TOBFORCE's desperate defense of & the breaking of Rommel's famed Afrika Korps' stranglehold on Tobruk. It's the story of the Royal Navys' heroic efforts to keep the fortress supplied & the importance of bombed out Malta. The reader will be aside the troops as they defend the outer Red Line,as they make nightly sorties into no-mans land,as they defend the harbor from air attacks by the Luftwaffe, the dreadfull liviing conditions, the lack of good water & rations, the loss of their comrades & the uncanny bravery of the battle-hardened troops of the British Commonwealth, including the repulsing of two major attacks by Rommel & the Afrika Korps. The maps are excellent & go along with the text as well as any WWII book I have ever read. The detail & flow of this book keeps the reader looking forward to each & every page. There is an additional discusion & appraisal on Rommel.Written from the British viewpoint, the author holds no punches on criticizing Rommel for his decisions & tactics at various points of the seige, while at the same time supporting the Commonwealth commanders even when mistakes were made.Looking at the seige from hindsight some of the criticism is unfounded but overall is refreshing as the majority of books on the Desert War gloss over Rommels mistakes, instead emphasising his great victories. This is a 'must read' for any serious student of the African Desert Campaign & World War II as a whole.
