| This album is excellent. I have listened to the whole thing at least twice a week for the last year. I don't get tired of the driving rhythm or entrancing lyrics James has to offer in this compilation. |

"James at Their Best" | 2005-08-04 |

| If you're even slightly wary of albums with "Best of.." in the title, abandon any such reticence with this. It really is the best of this British Indie band and they're on top form with both the classic singles (Lay Down/Born of Confusion/How Was It For You? etc)and the lesser known material. And eighteen, thumpingly good tracks for the princely sum of under thirteen dollars is darned fine value. If it's a choice between this and a square meal, go for the CD. (Most of us could do with losing a bit of weight anyway!) This more than warrants its four out of five stars. |

I drive 45 minutes to work every day, and my sister-in-law gave me this cd because she thought it'd be a great cd to listen to in the car -- fun, upbeat, songs you can sing along to. I had never heard of this band, but I gave it a try. And now I just love it!
If you're considering getting this cd, do. I kind of think there's something for everyone on it. It sort of reminded me slightly of one of my favorite bands, REM. But it's definitely different so if you don't like REM, don't let that discourage you. My favorite songs on the cd are Sometimes, Born of Frustration, and Tomorrow, but I really have enjoyed every single song on the cd. It's pop-y, but in a crazy, insane sort of way. I mean, Hymn From a Village? What's that about? I don't know, but I love it. It's just all very refreshing, in a familiar sort of way. |

| James was one of the great unsung bands of the great Britpop era of the 90's. Overshadowed by The Stone Roses, Suede and such others, James churned out great chimey sounding pop. Since some of their albums were of scattershot quality and the band produced brilliant singles, a best of CD of this band makes sense. Its a great package, beautifully put together and a must have for any fan of British rock or great rock in general. Highly recommended! |

| James are one of our finest bands. I'm not sure if they are very well known on the other side of the Atlantic but they are a work of genius. Great songs like 'Laid' 'Sit Down' and 'She's A Star' make James one of the UK's finest bands. Give it a try Americans. |

"Seven you could play in church - but not Laid" | 2004-02-17 |

| One of the key bands to come out of Manchester, UK in the early 1980s. They survived the pressures of stardom and carried on making quality music. Here is a collection culled from the first 17 years or so. A rich tapestry with no fillers; every track is musically rich. Lyrics that are understandable by folk either side of the Atlantic that tell tales often poignant, always clever. From the beautiful Seven that you could play in church on a Sunday - to the tale of strained romance in Laid (that you wouldn't). This album is a delight that you will listen to many times. |

"Other Albumes Are Also 'The Best'...." | 2003-05-02 |

| This albume puts together some of James's good songs. It is definitely a really good albume in the sense that it is really flowing, that requires no skipping whatsoever. Though, I recommend that you purchase other albumes of James, too. Especially, 'Pleased To Meet You' and 'Whiplash' are the very best ones. And not many of the songs in these albumes are put in 'The Best of James', which is the only thing that is lacking, I should say. James's style generates around dramatic rhythms, influencing electronic beats, and a truly emotional voice. The blending of all these result sometimes in really sad songs - and I mean it; such as 'Out to Get You' and 'Low Low Low', whereas sometimes it becomes so energetic, such as 'Sometimes', 'She's a Star'. 'She's a Star' is my favorite song in this albume. However, I would definitely include 'Space', 'Getting Away With It All', and 'Pleased To Meet You' as other top quality songs, which are not included in the albume. If you haven't listened to James yet, I would say that I would make my introduction with 'Pleased To Meet You', because it is one of the peak albumes of the group. In comparison to other groups in British pop/rock genre, I would say that James's songs are more varied when compared to Oasis, which usually build their songs on the same chords. And, in contrast to general british groups, James seems to have a more positive, or at least optimistic atmosphere in their albumes. Experience James; it's worth it. |

"Get More Than Just "Laid"" | 2002-12-10 |

Imagine every great English band from yesterday and today- the Beatles, Bowie, Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, New Order, etc, and roll them into one and add in something extra..... perhaps a little more passion and humor- and you have James- an underappreciated, multi-talented group of musicians! Though the departure last year of lead singer, Tim Booth leaves their future up in the air, this Manchester England band have left quite a mark on music. It is safe to say that they have been one of the most talented, impressive, and underrated bands in the last decade or so. In the early 90's, when they were first gaining international recognition, we American's were too obsessed with the over-hyped grunge movement. By the mid to late 90's, the boring "roots-rock" of Dave Matthews and Blues Traveler was all the rage, as were British bands like Oasis and Blur who never came close to being as versatile and original as James. In short, with the exception of the quirky 1993 hit, "Laid," America missed out on James. What a pity! Well, this greatest hits package, from 1998, is a chance to hear what we missed! ( I say we cause it took me some time to get around to them too!) While there are so many amazing James albums to buy, the hits are a good place to start. Sure, "Laid" is here, but there is much much more! Anybody with good taste in cutting-edge, well-done rock music will instantly take to much of these songs. Tracks like "Say Something," "Sometimes," "She's a Star," "Tomorrow," and "Out to Get You" are some of the most powerful, satisfying and infectious songs to come out of the 1990's. Though America was too busy playing out "Smells Like Teen Spirit, and "Under the Table and Dreaming" to even come close to appreciating James, here is a chance to hear a band that gave us some of the finest music the 1990's had to offer. |
