Maybe it's actually more of a 4.5 for me. I do like pretty much every song, with Stop Draggin' My Heart Around and Don't Come Around Here No More being my favorites. Yes, they don't sound like Petty's originals. They sound pretty punk, as a previous reviewer noted. No offense to Mr. Petty, but when I listen to a bunch of his songs in a row they kind of all sound the same. This album avoids that, and, in my opinion, sounds great.
Also, I don't see a song list up for this album at this time, so:
1. American Girl- Everclear 3:32
2. Breakdown- Engine Kid 4:29
3. Here Comes My Girl- Throneberry 5:25
4. Even the Losers- Nectarine 5:03
5. Listen to Her Heart- Truck Stop Love 2:34
6. Insider- Silkworm 3:41
7. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around- Loud Lucy with Louise Post
4:02
8. You Got Lucky- Edsel 5:09
9. Nightwatchman- Punchdrunk 4:01
10. Don't Come Around Here No More- Fig Dish 5:11
11. Century City- AMiniature 3:36
12. Southern Accents- Dexter Methoropham 4:41 |

| CAUTION! This CD IS hazardous to your health, karma, and piece of mind. If you are a collector of ALL THINGS PETTY then there may be a place in the corner of your basement for this disk. Otherwise save your money or take a friend to lunch or better yet invest it in any other CD that Amazon offers. The covers of Insider, Breakdown, and Nightwatchman are just very hard to sit through...seriously hard, seriously. (If my redundance changes just one mind my my work here is done). American Girl by Everclear is a not too bad cover. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around by Loud Lucy isn't offensive in the least...high praise indeed! If you pass through this world without hearing the rest, well, You Got Lucky... |

"Great Disc!" | 1999-11-22 |

| If you enjoy any other types of music in addition to TP (let's say you enjoy a bit of punk) and have an open mind, you will enjoy this disk. It's like tribute disks were before tribute disks became just a way to sell more CD's to benefit big bands who don't need any more record sales. This is a fun disk and based on interviews with TP, he liked it too. |

"Indie punks take their turns at some great pop songs" | 1999-01-07 |

| Tom Petty's success as an artist is due to many factors: distinctive singing, talented band, funny hats, entertaining videos, etc. Foremost, however, is the writing of great, concise pop songs which bear more similarity to the new wave punks of the late 70's than to the southern California rockers with which the Heartbreakers are often associated. It is most appropriate, then, that this tribute album contains efforts by lo-fi indie rockers such as Throneberry, Fig Dish, and Silkworm, as opposed to bands which would initially seem a more logical choice (i.e. Blues Traveler, everything, From Good Homes, etc.). The inventive takes on these songs prove that Petty's greatest strength is his writing. Even when drenched in feedback and distortion, or when Stan Lynch's signature swinging drumbeat is replaced with the punk drums of Everclear, all these songs are instantly recognizable for the classics they are, as well as given new life by the irreverent yet respectful arrangements. When Dave Stewart breathed an eerie psychadelic groove into "Don't Come Around Here No More" on Southern Accents, it made sonic waves and garnered new respect for TP, yet when Fig Dish deconstructs the song to its bare elements, it's exposed for the bitter kiss-off it truly is, especially when the attitude is accentuated by some of the best use of distortion this side of Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore. Whether you're an indie rock fan or a Petty-file, this disc is definitely a keeper. |

"Tom Petty as you have never heard him before!" | 1998-09-08 |

| Tribute albumns are usually stupid. You hear pop groups playing the songs you love completely wrong. This albumn is differant. You can hear Everclear singing about the "American Girl"; Nectarine singing "Even the Losers" and hear Edsel singing the title track. Alternative bands singing the songs you love, alternatively. It is a must for all Tom Petty fans! |
