| It was a very good idea by Sony to put together a collection of the greatest performances of some of the greatest classical compositions of the last century. For starters, the CD collection excels at bringing a good selection of music from the Baroque period to more modern works of the twentieth century. I found the two booklets accompanying the CDs very helpful and interesting to learn more about the performers. Personally I found a few things that could have improved the value of this collection. Sony decided not to digitally remaster some of the early recordings such as the first track, a 1903 recording of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, which sounds great for a 97 year old work but terrible with all the hisses, skips, and statics. The producers perhaps wanted the piece to sound exactly as the original format but I find it a bit too painful to the ears. Another disappointment are the few songs that were included not for the quality of their performance itself but more because of the celebrity status the performers bring, such as Barbra Streisand attempting to sing Debussy's Beau Soir in french. All in all, this Sony collection is a good one and a nice addition for collectors. |
