Here is what people are saying about the Bach - Mass in B minor / Argenta, Nichols, Chance, Stafford, Milner, W. Evans, Gardiner
5 Star Rating  "Truly first-class"2009-11-11
- Reviewed By K. Swanson from Austin, TX United States
Over the past few decades I've heard a number of versions of this, one of Bach's finest works and one of the true classical classics, and Gardiner's still reigns supreme.

If there's a flaw it might be the relatively low-key soloists, but perhaps that was Gardiner's concept: to not let any specific performance overwhelm the amazingly perfect balance of the period instruments and respect for the intention of the compser.

This feels like the version JS himself would like, if one might hazard such a guess. It has all the hallmarks of the man's genius--incredible musical logic combined with sheer musicality, deep emotion and yet much restraint--and never seems to highlight the conductor over the music, as many baton wavers tend to do.

And let's face it: this is such an incredible work of musical art, the best idea is to get out of Bach's way and simply present as much transparency as seems possible. Gardiner and his players do just that.

This would have to be on pretty much any list of the top 100 classical cds, and perhaps quite near the top of that list.

Glorious, truly.

Bach composed music for the glory of God, and whatever deity one chooses to worship, you can hear His or Her divinity herein.

5 Star Rating  "A Little Advice On Listening"2009-07-03
- Reviewed By skoldamir from Sacramento, CA United States
I hope you are convinced by some of the prior reviews that this is an amazing version of the B Minor Mass but please note that this is not your ordinary piece of vocal music.

I would like to be so bold as to offer a little advice on listening. You can think I am strange by doing so but that's OK. Take what you can use.

If you are not Christian or Catholic, convert for two hours (no holy water needed). I am Jewish so if I can do it, so can you.

Next, don't listen to this music as background music. Bach didn't write the B Minor Mass half-heartedly so you should respect him and his genius of expression and really listen and pay attention to all the vocal and instrumental lines the best you can. Give yourself to the music and read the text while listening. The music and meaning are one connected whole designed to create an effect. If you are open to this, you will understand what I mean here.

The music is an objective art form that is meant to open your ego through your emotions and experience something beyond it. I am not trying to be corny but there is a One after all that we are all part of. Bach was only able to express this ineffable reality in his version of religion at this time and place in history so that's what you need to give yourself to in order to deeply understand what he was trying to convey. Let's all be Catholics or Lutherans for a couple of hours and be moved...

2 Star Rating  "Disappointing"2007-12-21

I do not understand what exactly was the thought behind this performance. The tempi are all displaced, they sound either rushed or sluggish. There is no motivation or expression in the sound of either the choir or the soloists and the Kyrie is just awful! I have never heard such disjointed and pretentious phrasing. There is no feeling for the style nor the words! I'm a professional musician so I know a thing or two, and I would not recommend this recording to anyone.

Bach - Mass in B minor / Argenta, Nichols, Chance, Stafford, Milner, W. Evans, Gardiner is a grand recording with the fine work done by Gardiner. The Monteverdi choir sings with conviction and being a devout person at heart I verily felt moved by the conviction of their singing. The book-let is a mixed bag. Well-written esays and a wonderful cover picture and then you have an atrocious photograph. It looks like it was shot with a polaroid camera by a friend of Gardiner and not done by a professional photographer. Regardless, this is not a recording to missed and I give it 5 stars.

2 Star Rating  "The Skipping Bach"2007-08-15
- Reviewed By An Amazon User
I have owned this recording since it first came out. The big attraction was the period performance on authentic instruments, as up to date as scholarship (well, scholarly fashion at the time) could desire. The other reviewers have fairly described the sound and the singing, both of which are excellent, BUT --- And here lies the rub. The intolerably mannered conducting vitiates almost all the rest. It's the same as with Gardiner's Handel recordings--no suggestion of dignity or weight or, as another reviewer has said, of spirituality, that other dimension that lies behind the notes on the page. The myth of objectivity in conducting has led to performances like this one, technically proficient but hollow and self-satisfied. Fortunately it is not hard to hear where things go wrong and to describe the effect--musical lines reduced to mannered little phrases with staccato endings, a style of conducting that goes against the players' natural tendency to play their hearts out, so the effect is of cramped and bloodless note-spinning, tempi that are capriciously hurried even for a choleric man like Bach. Try the Gloria, which scampers along so fast that the words become as meaningless as the music: clearly a refusal to allow any weight or grandeur in music from an age that loved pomp and drama. There were other places where faster tempi might have worked, but this prestissimo must have been chosen deliberately to show off how progressive the conductor thought he was. This is turning Bach into some kind of skipping courtier like Mozart in AMADEUS or Osric in HAMLET. Gardiner is a man playing in the shallows when the whole ocean lies before him. Avoid this set - it's like asking for bread and getting a stone. As another reviewer has said, it takes a great deal to remove the spiritual from Bach; Gardiner has managed it triumphantly.
