Some one recommended Five Iron Frenzy if I liked ska, and they weren't wrong. I was a little nervous when I found out that they were "Christian" ska, but they're not preachy or anything. I like their up-beat and fast nature.

There is no doubt, Every New Day is my favorite song ever written. It has been for the last 4 years, and I expect it will always hold that special place in my heart. Of course, that isn't the only good song on that CD. In fact, this CD probly contains more of my favorite songs than any other 2 CDs. Some of their best! You'll love it!

This CD would get 5 stars strictly on the strength of "Every New Day" - my favorite song from the early days of the incredibly fun and random Christian ska era (and maybe the 90's as a whole). I remember the first time I heard it (ca 1998), driving I-90 across Indiana, and feeling like my restless faith and tired passions had been given a voice. But beyond the final track "Our Newest Album Ever" was a solid piece of work as FIF wrestled with their passion becoming their job, were honing their social voice, and refused to take anything too seriously (Canada will get lodged in your brain resulting in spontaneous inadvertent smirking (SIS) for days). Can a CD from the late 90's be a classic? If so, this one is.

The BEST CD'S OF ALL TIME! I'm not lieing when I say that this album came to me at a time of a real depression. I had FIF's first album, Upbeats & Beatdowns, and I was really excited about this album. It helped me through a lot of difficult times being a pre-teen, and now looking back on it, almost ten years ago, I still listen to this album on a regular bases. The only song on this album that I do not like is track 9. The rest of the album just has an amazing muscial oddessy that everyone will enjoy. I'll go in order of the track listing:
Handbook For The Sellout: 10/10: Amazing opener for any album
Where is Micah? 8/10: Good song, not the most catchy though
Superheros 9/10: Good song, funny lyrics
Fistful of Sand: 10/10: Amazing song, not a good one live though
Suckerpunch 10/10: A very fun song, fun lyrics, and fun live
Kitty-Doggy 10/10: Fun song, very short old demo song taken from a previous live show.
Blue Comb 78' 10/10: Perhaps one of the best songs FIF has ever recorded, this song is a very good song, slower, but has very good lyrics and is overall very fun and intriguing.
Banner Year: 10/10: More upbeat then the last song, has good lyrics and very upbeat and good sounding, pleasing to the ears.
Seasons (forgot the name of it): 5/10: the least best song of this album, feels like a filler for the cd
Litmus 10/10: Very good song, good lyrics, and fun.
Oh Canada! 10/10: One of the most fun FIF songs, and very fun lyrics.
Most Likely to Succeed 9/10: A very good song, not very uplifting, but it's very very good overall.
Every New Day Infinate/10: The best song that FIF has ever recorded, the most popular and most favorite of any FIF fan. A Truly amazing song with amazing lyrics.
Overall I would say, now that FIF is over, if your new to this band, definitly start with this cd, then get "The End is Here" for I find that to be the 2nd best FIF cd over all their cd's. I have all of thier cd's and they were definitly the best christian band ever!

It all started when i was bored and went rummaging through my brother's CDs. As a pre-teen i hadn't found a kind of music i particularly liked but i remembered my brother getting Newest Album Ever as a present so i listened to it - and fell in love with Five Iron Frenzy. I thought it was so kool that a rock band had horn instruments. 5-Iron is definitely my favorite band and Newest Album Ever is very nearly my favorite album. You can't go wrong with the subtle humor in Suckerpunch and Superpowers and the hard rocking of Handbook For The Sellout and Fistful of Sand. Plus FIF goes all out in their love for God with Every New Day, one of the best songs i've ever heard. BUY THIS ALBUM U WILL NOT REGRET IT - SKA ALL THE WAY

This is the best ska rock album ever the be made on this planet )or any other). Every song (with the exception of those weird "funny" filler tracks) is catchy and just plain rocks. You will find yourself singing slong to suck classics as: Superpowers, suckerpunch, the hiarious oh canada, and there classic Brand New Day (which they end there wonderful concerts with). These guys mix comedy with normal everyday stuff and how to get through it. This album is wonderful and their live shows are hilarious. Do yourself a favour and pick up this cd. You can't go wrong.

Hmmm... where to start... Well actually, as far as Five Iron Frenzy, this is where I started. This was actually my first positive exposure to ska, for that matter. A year or two earlier, I heard the Bosstones, & I couldn't stand them. So, like many people I've discovered, I assumed I didn't like ska (which is a hilarious concept, now). This cd kicks off with a bang, as "Handbook For the Sellout" rocks you sonically, and challenges your level of musical-snobbery (what a band). And the fun doesn't stop there, goodness no. The worthy singles "Suckerpunch" & "Superpowers" get you thinkin skankin' might not be such a silly dance after all. Through to the jazzy "Second Season", & on to my personal favorite, "Every New Day". In the space of this one album, my musical horizons were expanded, & I even found myself influenced as a musician, especially with Scott Kerr (Yellow Second) still in the band for this album. Five Iron Frenzy, you will be missed. (tear) |
