Here is what people are saying about the Alban Berg Quartet, Gerhard Schulz, Hatto Beyerle, Thomas Kakuska, Valentin Erben Günther Pichler - Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets / Alban Berg Quartet

Without shame I must confess I have eight versions of this CD, Different interpreters, Some Good, Some better but this particular CD somehow has captured my ear. you don't need to go to extreemes like I do, because I enjoy doin it so, but just give this VERSION a shot and judge for your self.

1 Star Rating  "EMI is not to be Trusted"2009-03-21
- Reviewed By User: A2YM0GHH6IIKQY
On May 1st of 2008. I purchased an EMI box set "Shostakovich: The Complete Symphonies - Mariss Jansons (10 CD)." I absolutely love 9 of the 10 disks in this set. Disk six is defective. I have tried it in three different CD players or computer CD drives. The disk will play in all three, but there is persistent noise and crackling on top of the music throughout the disk. There are no scratches or apparent damage. I think it's a bad pressing or some other form of manufacturing defect. Another reviewer made this comment on this set giving it one star. As the disk does not appear to have any damage and in light of the experience of the other reviewer, an exchange does not seem to have a high likelihood of resolving the problem.

I proposed that Amazon give me a discount on another recording of Shostakovich's 7th, the only symphony on disk six. Since I had not listened to all 14 symphonies within 30 days to check them for defects, Amazon would not compensate me in any fashion. I bought another recording of the 7th, no big deal.

Fast forward to February 18th, 2009. I purchase another EMI box set: Beethoven - The Complete String Quartets / Alban Berg Quartet. The last two minutes of the first disk, the final movement of Quartet in F major, Op.59 No.1, the first "Rasumovsky" quartet is full of skips and other sound defects. Nothing visible. It's factory direct incompetence. I'm now checking the other disks, but its March 20th. Burned again. Fortunately in this instance, I already have another set of Beethoven's middle string quartets. Hopefully it's just the one disk. I'll have to listen to find out. I understand if a box set is labeled a "budget" set because there may be a consensus that there are better recordings available, more highly appreciated interpretations, or both, but the CD should work, and one shouldn't have to listen to 5, 10, or 20 hours of music as soon as they buy it to ensure they're not getting screwed. I'll never buy another disk from EMI again. I've bought 100s of CDs and to have this happen twice in six months with the same label is simply unacceptable. They are now black listed. It's a shame, because the music's great, but I cannot stomach giving EMI another penny. How much can they possibly be saving by failing to implement reasonable quality control in their factories?

Briefly, I was pleased with the quality of the recordings and, as always, the CD's were well packaged.

5 Star Rating  "Beethoven's SQs are in a Class of their Own......"2008-10-17
- Reviewed By User: A2U2OY3EEB4WB1
Well let me tell you, Beethoven was a ground breaking composer in just about every category he composed in and his SQs are NO Exception. B amazes me with his twists and turns. B was a moody individual and his SQs reflect his personality. Everything here is exceptional. He pushes the limits and then pulls back the reigns and provides you with a heart wrenching slow mvt which melts you. There is something for everyone, he includes a full range of emotions.

The Op. 18 SQs are his starting point with an exclamation point. They are 4 mvt. Haydn style SQs, but seem to take you to a place where no one else was going. They are preludes to his Mid to Late SQs. In a way, I wish he would have written a few more of these sets before moving on, because they are exceptional.

From what I have read about B, he tirelessly researched his predecessors and found a new inventive prospective which they had not conceived. For instance, the Mid-SQs, Op. 59, 74, 95 move in an uncharted direction which no other composer was following at the time. The final mvt.s are mvt.s within mvt.s. Slow and fast passages all in the last movt. while keeping their listener appeal; only Beethoven can do this.

As for his late SQs, he seems to reach to the future and beyond. Think of all of those modern musicians who reached to the future or were or are ahead of their time. Well, B did that two centuries ahead of them. The late SQs are celebral leaps which serve as models to composers after him.

As for the recording and performance, the ABQ have made B's SQs their OWN!!! THERE IS NOTHING BETTER.

4 Star Rating  "They play very well"2008-08-25
- Reviewed By User: A3VKNMFUDUN44N
They play well, a very clean interpretation. I think they may be a starting point to Beethoven Quartets. It is possible to hear every instrument at all times and it is fine to know each part. But I like several other quartets in Beethoven.

4 Star Rating  "Great Sound and early quartets"2008-08-24
- Reviewed By lsteels
The Berg Beethoven is big and juicy and this suits the early quartets. Their sound and the recorded sound are certainly the best you will hear. The later quartets miss the introspection of some of the other great string quartets.
A great bargain and tops in sound!!!
