To go by the photo of the performers included in the booklet, as well as the ADD designation, these performances date back much further than the CD release date of 1994 -- I'd guess the mid-1970's. Preston is a fine performer, but in these early recordings show some weaknesses and inconsistencies in his sound. There is clear musical intelligence here, however, and that for me outweighs whatever technical issues there may be.
This set is available through Musical Heritage Society for less money, and it is good enough to warrant an investigation.

I am a fan of Pinnock and Savall. I had never heard of Preston before this cd, but having Pinnock and Savall on the same cd was worth the investment for the Musical Heritage Society version which costs less than the price here.
I can't say I am as floored as I am with Pinnock's work with Rachel Podger, or as swept away as I am with most of Savall's work. But I am keeping this one. The flute is not my favorite instrument, but I think this will grow on me. |

| Yes it is expensive, yes it is a special order item, but sweet Lord is it more than worth the time and money. Stephen Preston, the British baroque flute master and choreographer combines with harpsichord legend Trevor Pinnock to create a Bach flute collection unrivaled in its musicality, virtuosity, and authenticity. Preston and Pinnock play together as if they were joined at the hip. The E-flat Major Sonata is more of a duet between the flute and the harpsichord, and the two play off each other as if they were just 2 appendages of the same body. The meticulous attention paid to technical accuracy while always maintaining a healthy musical line resulted in a CD that should help teach all musicians how to play this music. Bravo, Mr. Preston. |
