The Roches are all but gone now. They have one recent release. They are from the 80's. Most of what I have of their fine song writing is on vinyl. The three sisters were inspired and trained by their dad.
But this disk is of Christmas standards done in their own harmonies, their own musical idiom. I first saw them on "Saturday Night Live" way back in their salad days. They did an a cappella version of Handel's chorus. It stopped the show.
Winter Wonderland in Brooklynese! Get it before it is lost! |

| It has a great beat and it is easy to dance to. Seriously, we have enjoyed the cassette tape of this album for years and were delighted to get it in the CD format so we can play it in the car. The voices and harmonies are outstanding. |

| I first purchased this album in the mid 80's. Since this time I have bought it for family and friends and all have loved it. It has the best Good King Winceslas and We Three Kings I have ever heard. Also the Winter Wonder Land and Frosty the Snowman will make you smile. Purchase and enjoy! |

| This is one of my favorite Christmas CD's. There is an especially fun version of "Frosty the Snow-Man" that my daughter absolutely loves. I also love this version of "We Three Kings." |

"Great live too, on their two-week tour." | 2005-12-02 |

This has to be one of the best "non-traditional" Christmas albums, right up there with "John Denver & the Muppets: A Christmas Together." Even if you get "Christmassed out" by the decorations and carols that started up in the stores even before Halloween, these arrangements are so unique that they might get you back in the spirit.
I had the distinct pleasure of being at the opening show of the Roches' "two-week tour" which began tonight in Collingswood, New Jersey. Their harmonies may not be as tight, and their voices may not be as strong as they were 20 years ago, but whose are? They had a magical hold on the audience, and hung out afterwards to chat. The show started with the title track "We Three Kings". Suzzy's comments about how important the Christmas holiday was to them growing up give these songs an added dimension. They're not just performances, but expressions of faith and insights into their childhoods.
If you have a chance to catch them on this tour, do it! Merry Christmas! |

"The best Christmas CD in my collection" | 2002-12-18 |

| I have heard a zillion versions of nearly every song on this CD, and somehow the Roches make each one sound fresh and interesting. With the exception of "Frosty the Snowman" (I NEVER need to hear a chorus of children singing, or adults singing like children, thank you very much), they do something a little different with each song - of particular note is the Handel piece ("For Unto Us a Child Is Born") and "We Three Kings" (normally this song sounds like a funeral dirge to me; here it is upbeat and thoughtful). The Roches have unusual voices but fantastic harmonies (they're awfully lucky that one was born a soprano, another a mezzo, and another a deep alto), and they sound great even when - or perhaps particularly when - they have NO musical accompaniment. If I had to throw away all my Christmas CDs but one, this would be the keeper. A fresh take on all your favorite classics - buy it now! |
