It is a beautiful set. The box is beautiful and I love that the CD's are separated into 4. Micheal York narrates and he tells a beautiful story. It was shipped quickly and came in excellent condition. A wonderful asset to my classroom.

This book still had all of the wonder and magic that it had for me when I was a kid. In fact, the book probably means more to me now then it did then. Because now I can understand all the various undertones of the story. When I first read the book I was too young to understand all that was going on under the surface of the main plot. So, to be able to see and digest all the many layers made the book more rewarding and enjoyable. This is a great series and I plan on re-reading the rest of the books at some point.

This allegorical book, supposedly aimed at children, provided Mr. Lewis with a wonderful medium to deliver a Christian message to readers of all ages. He casts the perennial contest between good and evil as a secret adventure of four displaced children in a land frozen under the control of a wily wicked witchy ruler. While good prevails, it does not come without struggle and sacrifice. Along the way the Lion of Judah acquires a new name and important lessons of loyalty and courage are learned.

I really like books that are inspiring, thought-provoking, and fun. It makes me wonder what is in the back of all my closets! This book makes a great gift for young people that they will treasure throughout life. Another Christian fantasy book I like, aimed at a somewhat older audience, is ARROWS THROUGH TIME: A Time Travel Tale of Adventure, Courage, and Faith.

This is the second novel in The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, following The Magician's Nephew, if you go by the time-line of the stories. However, it was the first of the series to be published.

The main character of The Magician's Nephew, Digory Kirke, is now a kindly old professor, living in a huge home in the countryside. It is 1945, and four children are entrusted into Professor Kirke's care, to get the children out of London during the bombings of World War Two. The children are Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy Pevensie, who are pivotal characters in the rest of the series.

While at the professor's home, the children discover a wardrobe, filled with coats, that sometimes acts as a doorway into the land of Narnia, the creation of which was described in The Magician's Nephew. While in Narnia, the Pevensie siblings meet Aslan, the lion who rules there, as well as the White Witch, Jadis, who longs to usurp Aslan. They also meet Father Christmas, dwarves, centaurs, and many talking animals. Through much strife and several adventures, the rule of Narnia is decided, as the Pevensie children fulfill an ancient prophecy.

The book moves quickly, and the entire, event-laden tale spans little more than one hundred pages. The events are described well, but other aspects of the story are not. The settings are not well-described, making it difficult to visualize the places where events occur. There are exceptions, like the Stone Table, but most places are only briefly detailed.

The biggest piece of flatness comes, though, in character development. Only one of the Pevensie children, Edmund, is developed well as a character. Peter is merely the older, better-behaved brother; Susan is the older sister; Lucy is the youngest. Those three key characters are almost cardboard cut-outs. Aslan and Jadis come across as relatively full characters, but the Beavers and all the other characters are just names in ink, with no personalities. This really startled me. At first, I thought the characters might seem under-developed because I saw the movie, where the characters were either flesh-and-blood people or well-done CGI creations, with personalities, but I think this weakness in the book is there anyway. I have read enough books, including books meant for young readers, to know that characters are usually depicted as more three-dimensional.

Given that the Narnia books are considered, by many, to be classics, often compared to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the lack of depth in the characters was hard to believe. However, the story, the actions, and the premise still made The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe a worthwhile reading experience.

If you like the Narnia books, try the richer novel, by newcomer D. Barkley Briggs, The Book of Names: A Novel (Legends of Karac Tor)

I read the Narnia books for the first time when I was about 12/13 yrs old. I loved them! Couldn't put them down. After the first Narnia movie came out, I decided to buy them all hardbound to re-read and keep for the kids. They still read great. Even if you aren't a Christian, I wasn't when I read them the first time, the stories are a wonderful picture of fantasy intermingled with a light morality play. If you are a Christian, you'll also love the symbolism behind Aslan (Jesus) and the White Witch (Satan). If you are 10 or 110, you'll love these books and could read them over and over and over again.

Narnia is a series of books that reflect on the maturing of children's spirits into adulthood. C.S. Lewis masterfully creates a fictional novel that engages the human heart allowing the reader to ponder his or her own soul. The paths taken by each character in these books give the reader a chance to choose which one he or she will take in real life.
