I've looked for Playing by Ear for years. Am delighted to have found it. Preston is amazing.

Very enjoyable alternative acoustic guitar. Cited by Kaki King (the woman behind the August Rush guitar sound) as her inspiration, it's easy to see how he inspires.
I've seen too many reviews of guitar players that say things like 'I can't believe its only one guy' etc. Well this player actually justifies such comments.
In terms of style I would suggest a similarity to Leo Kottke with a touch of Michael Hedges thrown in. This album features two full albums("Pointing Up"('82) and "Playing By Ear"('84)and they certainly fit nicely together. The best cuts, for me, are the ones that offer wild and unfettered finger picking frenzy, but he gives us some more gentle pieces by way of contrast.
Later on in his career he developed an amazing 'two hand tapping style' which is astounding to behold but, perhaps, sacrifices some melodic element in favour of rhythm and groove(if you want that side of Reed try "Metal").
I've got a few of his albums now(this was the first I bought)but I still find this is the one I'll reach for first.
This is one (or actually TWO) of my favorite acoustic guitar albums and I was quite surprised to see it had not been reviewed yet. These are Preston Reed's earlier recordings for the Flying Fish label and the picking is a bit more wild and 'hardcore' than his more recent offerings.
This recording by Preston Reed sort of fits nicely in between Leo Kotke and his American Gothic solo guitar style, and Michael Hedges and his more modern pedal-to-the-metal, "Heavy Mental" acoustic guitar music. Sometimes the listener will swear that there is more than one guitar making all this music, such is the mastery of this player.
If you are a fan of finger-style guitar, and not afraid of speed and dynamics (as opposed to the slow, unengaging, easy to tune out New Age muzak that so much solo acoustic guitar music gets lumped into these days) then give this disc a try. You will get two albums for the price of one, and it makes a great soundtrack for those long nighttime drives on dark, empty highways...
