This book is the perfect tribute to parents who encourage their children to have awe and respect of animals and nature. It is an inspiration to do the same. Lovely lovely lovely.
"Marvelously Captures the Wonder and Beauty of God's Creation"
A beautiful story of a father and child out owling on a winter night. The illustrations are wonderful and capture well the feeling of a still, snowy moonlit night in the woods, while hidden nighttime animals provide an opportunity to exercise observation skills. The still, lush feeling is reflected in the text as well. Through the child narrator's eyes you see the moonlight in a clearing "as white as the milk in a cereal bowl," and feel the crisp air through the scarf that covers your mouth. The sound of the owl's call, and her father's answering call, will echo in a child's memory after experiencing this book.
Owls in Native American traditions are usually perceived as dreadful beings, foreshadowing death and sorrow. I love the way this animal is portrayed in its created beauty, without these fearful overtones, and so redeems an element of God's creation that Satan has appropriated for his uses.
This book marvelously captures the wonder and beauty of God's creation, experienced in the context of a secure father-child relationship, with a warm home waiting at the end of the excursion. It's well worth acquiring.

Owl Moon is a timeless story of a father and child growing up together through a coming-of-age outing. While out looking for an owl at night the young child and father appreciate the winter world that surround them. In the end, it is the child who discovers that they have found more than just an owl on their journey, they have found hope, a bond and a memory to last a lifetime.
"A wonderful book for dads to share with daughters"
A simple story, beautifully told, with spellbinding pictures of moonlight on snow. I read and reread this book to my daughters when they were little. One day, when my oldest daughter and I were walking in the Mount Baker Wilderness in Washington state (in broad daylight) we heard loud hoots from a grove of Douglas fir--we scrambled over fallen logs to get closer, and then, up in the biggest of the big fir trees, we saw a great horned owl. My daugher was 10 at that time--bigger than the little girl in the story--but we looked at each other and grinned enormous grins because we had found an owl together, just like the dad and daughter in the book, and it was so magical for both of us.

I read to my children every night, religiously. This is one of a very few books that we are happy to pick up and re-read. They enjoyed it when they were 3 and 5, and they still enjoy it when they're now 7 and 9.
As an added bonus for fathers, the theme is about little things we might share with our children that leave a lifelong impression. My dream is that I am creating one or more lasting legacies with my children.
It's a beautiful story that is passionate about nature and the relationship between a father and a daughter. Jane Yolen's writing turns down a notch as she focuses on making the most beautiful moonlit knight you could imagine for a winter. It's not so much about looking for owls as it is about being out in nature with someone you care about. The description of the cold, snowy night is amazing, and the illustrations epitomize that feeling. A beautifully written and illustrated romance.
