I got this CD as a sample for the place I worked and simply fell in love with her voice. This is one of those CD's that you play over and over. This girl has one of the purest voices I've heard in a long time. If you like Enya and Loreena McKenna or just pure clarity of voice then you should give this album a try.

This is the first CD of Hollie that I bought. By the 2nd time I listened to this CD I was hooked. Hope she comes out with more soon.

If you love Steve McDonald's music and enjoy the clarity of Loreena McKennitt's voice, you need this in your collection while you still can obtain it. I'm trying to remember how old Hollie was when she sang on this album...17, I believe. Anyway, I got the impression that McDonald came across this talented young lady, took her under his wing, and helped get her name out there via this album. This talented fellow recognizes talent in other artists and collaborates, and I think this is a good combination. I hope they work together again sometime on a different album.

I often buy five or six CDs at a time including artist's who seem promising although I may not have heard their works previously. So it was
that I purchased Light From A Distant Shore by Hollie Smith. WOW! When this CD was recorded, she was in her late teens but, her voice has the range, clarity and sensitivity of an older, professional performer. Other reviewers have already made clear her relationship to Steve McDonald a consumate musician in his own right. Cleary, Ms. Smith is a very talented young singer from whom we need MORE albums. You'll find her well represented in the Mystic Spirts series of CDs and elsewhere but, I can't wait for her next release. GREAT STUFF! Enjoy. - Mountain Man Dan.

I've been a fan of Hollie's for a few years now and agree with the other reviewers (except about adding Jazz tunes...).

However, the Asheville, NC, fan is wrong about the meaning of "Skye Boat Song" (Charlie was born in Rome and grew up in France; and IIRC barely or rarely stepped foot in Scotland before the '45)... it is about the Bonnie Prince escaping after his defeat in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion battle at Culloden Moor (April 1746). The reference in the lyrics: "Flora will keep/Watch by your weary head" is Flora MacDonald, who helped Prince Charlie escape (disguised as a woman).

Hollie's voice outshines any number of the "popular" female singers today and this is definitely a cd worth having in your collection; you can't go wrong. And if you like Hollie, you must check out her step-father Steve McDonald.
