This album was released in 1978 and is their best album with David Lee Roth. The opening song is Runnin with the devil, which is in my opinion has the best backup vocals from eddie and michael, the 2nd song is Eruption, there are no vocals, just an amazing guitar solo from Eddie, the 3rd song is originally sung by roy orbison, which is called oh pretty woman. The song Jamies cryin is a great song to, but alex van halen said that is his least favorite song in the entire song catalog

I am a big Van Halen fan, and I will say this: After listening to all of their records, I have come to the conclusion that their debut is their finest. In many artists' cases, the debut album is usually one of the weakest in the catalog. But not in Van Halen's case.
1978 was a year of change in rock and roll. The punk rock movement was well underway, and heavy metal was at it's finest. Van Halen emerged; led by Eddie Van Halen, probably one of the best guitarists of our time, and "Diamond" David Lee Roth as the vocalist.
The debut album has got to be one of the best albums of the '70s. 'Atomic Punk,' 'Running With The Devil,' 'Eruption,' 'You Really Got Me' and one of my personal favorites, 'Ice Cream Man' are all here. Heck, it's practically a greatest-hits album!
And, the sound quality is superb! Warner Bros. has chosen this album to be included in their ongoing Warner Remasters series, giving this the (long needed) remaster it deserves.
Overall, if you were stranded on a desert island, and you had to choose one, just one Van Halen disc to take with you, this would absolutely be my pick. To me, there is no other album quite like this one from Van Halen. All of them are great, but this is the best.
Highly recommended for any Van Halen. I don't care if you are one who only buys the best-ofs and greatest-hits albums, you still need to have this album in your collection.
Highly recommended. A must own!
ENJOY!!! |

One of the two albums that made 1978 *the* watershed year in rock music (see also, The Cars). Sure, The Ramones turned things upside down in '76 with their first album (and thank god for that), but they were (a) almost completely ignored at the time, and (b) treading the path that the Dolls and Dics had blazed. Somehow, though, 1978 saw the birth of both new wave (Cars) and new (neu?) metal, and people paid attention, buying these albums in droves. (When was the last time that two new, different genres emerged at the same time?) Not only were Van Halen way cooler than any other "metal" band at the time (sorry Buck -- the mustache was totally Members Only, no matter how much one loved the drum solo in "Godzilla"), but they were heavier when they wanted to be ("Eruption"), more melodic (everything else), and funnier ("Ice Cream Man"). Plus, they covered a Kinks classic at a time when no one could remember the Kinks, and in so doing, made the song their own. In a single album they established (1) a new sub-genre of rock, (2) a new guitar god, and (3) a new front-man personality/celebrity. Heady stuff for four goobs from LA. One of the 25 best rock albums of all time. Five stars.

Ok, I was buying the Jamie's Crying mp3 and I noticed that Van Halen 1 only got 4.5 stars with 306 reviews. I had planned to sit back and ENJOY all of the samples but those 4.5 stars were a terrible reminder that something was seriously wrong with some people in this world. I do not mean that maliciously as I am not a malicious person. However, we are speaking of VAN HALEN 1 PEOPLE!!! This is probably the absolute best album of all time. This guys revolutionized just about everything in the business. If they didn't they might as well have because EVERYONE loved them.
I seriously do not remember a single soul who do not at least like them. Even the rednecks and preppies liked them and then you kinda had to force that out of them because they still wanted to make fun of the "freaks" who listed to rock and wore black clothes and smoked. This is how friggin wonderful these guys are....I heard "You Really Got Me" on some movie about bored kids in suburbia with Matt Dillon playing his very first role, after being discovered skipping class at his school. Anyway Matt Dillon gets killed in the end. Sad, I like Matt Dillon. But...THIS IS VAN HALEN PEOPLE!!! I loved that song so very much and the credits were so messed up at the end of the movie that I could not see who the band was. I was 14 and it was the summer before I started high school. I went to the only record store in my town and searched through all the albums for the name of the SONG--You Really got Me. Do you guys know how long that took me? We are talking seriously long days, I mean the people at the store were beginning to become suspicious of me. I could not find it. None of my friends knew who it was either, we lived in a major "adult contemporary" town. They helped me in my search though like the loyal, loving, freak friends they were. Imagine my thrill, my joy, my RELIEF at finally finding the words "You Really Got Me" on the back of the band Van Halen's 8 Track tape.. I finally found it at J.C. Penneys. (Yes they sold music). It was in the V's and it took me at least another 3 hours search to find it.
I had two friends and my sister with me. We immediately rode our bikes back home to my house where we proceeded to skip to the "You Really Got Me" song. We put the stereo on "10" and rocked out!!! Thank God my mom and dad were at work! Then the REAL surprise came when we listened to the whole 8 track. It was unbelievable!!! I think we just sat there with our mouths open and drooled, it was like Heaven. Now, I have to state something I noticed about my fine friends who gave 5 stars. I review a lot here and I read even more reviews. I mean I read reviews for vitamins and cleaning supplies. I really like to read reviews. Reviews and forums, they are my facebook.
Anyway, I have NEVER, EVER, seen reviews as long as the 5 star ones for Van Halen 1. Do you 1, 2, and 3 starers even get that? There are about 6 each of you and over 250 5 stars. I totally believe in individual taste. Believe me, I was the total "underground music" and "pre-goth" movement girl. But COME ON PEOPLE!!! This is Van Halen. I do not need to tell you of the musical talent, genius and charisma that this band put forth on their first album, my other reviewer companions have done so BEAUTIFULLY. I could not state it any better than they have. I just had to get this tension I felt from staring at those horrible 4.5 stars for too long off of my chest.
I am now 41, a wife, a mother, a college graduate, an about to be teacher, a published poet and a kitty cat lover. When I hear anything from this album I am simply a 14 year old, skinny, innocent and shy little girl experiencing pure rock and roll for the first time in her life.

This album literally made me go WHOA. David Lee Roth proves why he's an entertainer. Michael Anthony proves why he's a great background vocalist, and bassist. Everyone on this record proves who they really are. Feel your love tonight really stands out to me out of all of them. Your question, why so? Because, when I play it in the car, the party emotions kick it. Dave sings it in that great way. Great album folks.

I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan. But there is no denying that this is an excellent record. With all the records they made, somehow, I seriously doubt that I'm alone when I say this first record of theirs is the best. 'Runnin With the Devil' is a really great and energetic opener. 'Eruption' is a nice instrumental. The cover 'You Really Got Me Now' has a great sound. 'Aint Talkin 'Bout Love' is one of the best songs on the record. 'I'm the One' is a bit weaker, but still alright. 'Jamie's Cryin' is a softer, but still really good song. 'Atomic Punk' is strange, but interesting and energetic. 'Feel Your Love' kind of goes against my nature, but it keeps the energetic pace of the record up. 'Little Dreamer' is a good moderate blast song. 'Ice Cream Man' has a huge following, but I will decline comment. 'On Fire' has a surprisingly great energy, and is a great conclusion to this really well done record. Thank goodness Eddie and David are FINALLY back together.

Van Halen (1978) rocks! It's a hard rock classic, and the best album the band has ever released. It has sold over 10 million copies and introduced the world to Eddie Van Halen's wild guitar pyrotechnics including a new guitar playing technique, (fretboard) tapping. Eddie's brother Alex plays the drums and Michael Anthony plays the bass on this album. Last but not least, the charismatic frontman David Lee Roth provides the over-the-top vocals and wild screams.
Runnin' With The Devil sets the tone for Van Halen with a killer guitar riff and a demonic scream-sing. The first lines of the first song on Van Halen's first album tell the tale.
I live my life like there's no tomorrow And all I got I had to steal Least I don't need to beg or borrow Yes, I'm livin' at a pace that kills Runnin' with the devil
The electric and blistering guitar solo Eruption follows, and pretty much just blew everybody's mind in 1978. And if that wasn't enough of an entrance, they perfectly nail The Kinks' You Really Got Me with heavy rocking version that makes the song their own. Classic! Ain't Talkin' Bout Love is another smoking guitar classic that rocks hard and adds more desperation and menace into the works. Right out of the gates with four hard rock classics! Yeah! Jamie's Cryin', Feel Your Love Tonight, and Little Dreamer are all rock classics, too, and keep pace with the others here. Atomic Punk and On Fire are solid rockers, and the blues parody Ice Cream Man starts out acoustic before morphing into a wild electric blues free-for-all.
If you get any of Van Halen's albums get this one. A must-have for party rockers, rock guitar fans, or anybody who likes to listen to hard rock music when they're runnin' with the devil.
