Here is what people are saying about the John Coltrane - Giant Steps
5 Star Rating  "Classic"2009-10-17
- Reviewed By wrn
It made sense for John Coltrane to record Giant Stpes in 1960. After spending years recording standards and hard bop, Coltrane was finally able to write music that matched his technical abilities.

Let's talk about that technical ability for a minute. The theme to remember, always, with Coltrane, is that he studied so hard, he internalized every scale, every inversion of every chord. Down to the nuance. He could take the most complex chords, 13ths with a flat fourth in the bass, and rocket around them as if it were do-ri-mi. He knew every detour and back alley. The western musical encylopedia was not in his head, it was in his fingers. When he mastered this, he went to eastern modalities, and I am sure got full command of those.

Finally he writes Giant Steps. Music that matches this massive ability. He stoped trying to lead the listener into the solo, and blasted through the intros, heads, in jazz terms, so he could spin his magic, and the more he played, the more direct he became. Coltrane does not go to you, you go to him, if fortunate enough.

Take the title track. The complex chords change each beat, yet Coltrane moves though them at 1000 mph. weaving his endless permutations. His ability is beyond stunning, and if there is any critisism, it is only that he is moving so fast you don't realize the technical magic of what he is doing. Even on a blues like "Cousin Mary," he is more interested in moving through the intro as quick as he can so he can get to work. If you can't keep up, though, check out his spare playing on "Niama" which later became one of his best avant gaurde vehicales.

For jazz purists, a little blasphamy: the only equal Coltrane had as a solo player was Frank Zappa. The music is almost unrelated but let's deconstruct this for a second. Both men refused to rest, even for a beat, and worked as many notes into their solos as they could. Yet they could make so many permutations, the playing never got boring. Both understood the blues on a primal level, and was able to take their solos and spin the form into endless permutations. Both even have intersting little sounds they make getting from note to note, and are the only players that, after all these years, have me cuing my CD to the second, trying to answer "what the hell was that."

After this, Trane went to Impulse, and threw out chords for modes, where he could spin his web in open spaces without having to anticipate the next bar.

It is almost as if he had to move beyond his own musical expertise to find the next step.

4 Star Rating  "The MFSL Version"2009-07-06
- Reviewed By User: A3KQLV5QJUGE95
No, I was not a Coltrane fan in the `60s. Like many of my generation, I was led to Coltrane's music by rockers such as Jim (now Roger) McGuinn and Carlos Santana, who credited Coltrane as an influence on their music, and by Miles Davis--I started with Bitches Brew and eventually worked back to Kind of Blue, and gee whiz, there was that Coltrane guy again! Giant Steps, recorded in 1960, was Coltrane's first recording as a leader, and it is generally considered something of a jazz classic.

Comparing the MFSL CD to the regular Atlantic version, I found the differences subtle, consisting mainly of subtly cleaner trebles and a slightly better separation of the instruments with the MFSL version. If you already have the Atlantic version, I see no real need to replace it with the MFSL version, but if you do not own a copy of this landmark recording, the MFSL version is the one to get. (One little nit to pick: despite all of MFSL's careful and lavish attention to detail, they managed to misspell the name of original producer Nesuhi Ertegun, changing his first name to "Neshui." Oops!)

Up to that point, Coltrane's first for Atlantic began what many consider his definitive reign as accessibly edgy bandleader, providing the launching point for his first true artistic streak which merged his formalized writings with a cultivated soloing which needed to expand outward ever since.

5 Star Rating  "Best album on which to start listening to Coltrane"2009-04-19
- Reviewed By foxdm6
This album is a landmark jazz recording. It contains arguably the finest tenor saxophone solo in the tune "Giant Steps." Two versions are presented: the blistering first track that makes most amateur saxophone players feel inferior and is endlessly studied by jazz saxophone students at music schools, and a more laid-back version.

The remainder of the album showcases Coltrane's playing before he veered into more esoteric areas. There is much here for the jazz fan, and any saxophone player should hear this as an example of what the instrument can do.

If you are new to John Coltrane's music, start here. It is a very good album on which to hear him in his prime.

So I've been intensely listening to Coltrane for all of, what, three months now? A novice to be sure. First, A Love Supreme, followed by some great albums from the Prestige collection (e.g., Coltrane (Prestige 7105)) and some good later stuff too (e.g., Sun Ship). But, as popular an album as Giant Steps is/was, I was afraid to throw down eleven bucks on it. I thought from the descriptions that it might be most just a musicianship-showoff album. After being shaken to my core by "A Love Supreme" and moved to tears by Ballads and incessantly tapping my foot to "Prestige 7105" I did not want to hear Coltrane just zipping through insane technical pieces for the sake of insane technicality. I feared that maybe this was Coltrane's "Facing the Animal" period album, so to speak. And ok, maybe Countdown is a little showoffy-for the sake of showing off, but it's short, and fun none the less. And the rest of the album is simply fantastic. Moving, impressive, fun at times, brooding at others. Incredibly accessible, too. Likeable/knowable from the first listen on. GREAT STUFF, Giant Steps, this.
