Here is what people are saying about the Bill Frisell, Elvin Jones, Dave Holland - Bill Frisell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones
5 Star Rating  "Pleasant, imaginative, dreamy jazz"2009-08-24
- Reviewed By quaz173
Although I listened to plenty of Bill Frisell tunes, this is the first Frisell CD I actually bought. That's not to say I don't like Frisell's style or am afraid to try something new. It's just that there are MANY Frisell CDs I would like to own, and I need to make sure I don't go crazy on a shopping spree. The reason I decided to go for this particular CD is because I have tremendous respect for Dave Holland. He would not make music that isn't in good taste or in some way original, creative, and stimulating.

And this is indeed the case here: the trio does some really fine work together and appear to have excellent chemistry. Alvin Jones and Dave Holland are absolutely flawless in providing the right rhythmic underpinnings for Frisell to be able to work his magic. Many people rag on Frisell for being too subtle and providing only partial melodies, but it is this subtlety that keeps things interesting, unpredictable, and avoids musical cliches. Bill is immediately recognizable for his tone and style, and this is exactly what this CD provides: the dreamy, creative, flowing, floating, weaving ambiance that is unmistakably a form of jazz. The fact that Frisell is a fine player cannot be disputed. If anything, this record reaffirms how fine a player he is and what attention to the most minute details of a song he has when he crafts it. Bill is definitely a perfectionist, and this is why he's in such a good company here.

Bill weaves several guitar tones throughout his music, which have been very thoughtfully overlayed. You can hear the sounds of acoustic, electric, and steel guitars - whether he actually plays steel here I cannot vouch, but the way some of the chords are played, they sound just like steel. This work certainly harkens back to "Gone, Just like a Train", with some of the similar electric guitar stylings making an appearance - weaving the elements of the more gentle country style with an occasional tinge of progressive rock, all built on top of a jazz rhythm section. To me, it is remarkable how this all comes together, but Frisell is the real genius to see this kind of sound through and be able to strike such a perfect balance with a little bit of everything without wandering off to any extreme in particular.

Overall, the music is just superb: very pleasant listening, top of the line professionalism and technique from all players, and inspired, well-connected interplay. Frisell makes you want to listen to these songs and gives you a generous helping of each, at the same time knowing just when to quit without wearing out to welcome. This is a music for people who can connect to their emotions and open their minds to something new and enjoy being surprised.

4 Star Rating  "Elvin's Too Mellow"2009-07-12
- Reviewed By User: A3KQLV5QJUGE95
Guitarist extraordinaire Bill Frisell has chosen a pair of jazz icons to accompany him on this stripped-down version of his vision of American music. The music sounds something like the music on his earlier Blues Dream (the title cut from that CD being reprised here, by the way), but the trio setting gives the sound a much different texture. Ten of the 12 cuts are Frisell originals; the covers include Henry Mancini's "Moon River" and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times."

Frisell plays both acoustic and electric guitars and does some fooling around with loops. Holland keeps things moving with his imaginative work on bass, but drummer Jones, who usually bangs the heck out of his drumkit, seems for the most part merely to be along for the ride. Perhaps he was uncomfortable with the music, or maybe he was just in a really mellow mood, but at any rate, his perfunctory drumming keeps this excellent outing from being truly outstanding.

Still, this is a recording that sounds a little bit better each time you listen to it, and you are likely to want to listen to it again and again. Frisell is a mesmerizing musician whose imaginative playing makes you want to listen over and over again. He is one of those musicians who truly has his own sound, and his own musical vision, while at the same time sounding very well rooted in tradition; and the same can be said for Dave Holland, who never fails to impress even though his playing is often self-effacing. Even though I wish Jones had played with more fire and imagination, I recommend this recording highly.

4 Star Rating  " Enticing, easy-going alt-Jazz"2008-09-02

Another eccentrically languid offering from this great guitarist with an excellent supporting cast provides ample counterpoint to a majority of sunny-side Jazz-guitar output. Touching around a multitude of styles, Frisell and company usually add a darkened, though certainly not negative connotation to what in lesser hands would have reeked of bland retreads (case in point: the often abused and exploited cover of Moon River totally works). Between imaginative covers, impressionistic homages to traditional forms, and heavier, more personal experimentation, this may be as good a crash course as any for beginners into this eclectic, prolific, singular artist. It is not his greatest- a few dead spots here and there crop up amidst reliable interplay, and the sampler feel touching on many different styles may alienate certain specific fan expectations, but in an attempt to be all things to all people of the mildly experimental jazz guitar form, the disc is a bridge-builder.

4 Star Rating  "An excellent display of Frisell's abilities."2007-06-29
- Reviewed By User: AAJZGDKAQZ1NJ
For years, I've been praying that Bill Frisell would make an album that balances the character and sweetness of his americana records with the hard grooving experimentation of records like the excellent "Unspeakable." With this outing, it seems Frisell has finally done it. From the very first phrase of Outlaws, a reworking of the tune from Blues Dream, we hear low-tuned acoustic bombast ala Marc Ribot ushering in Frisell's familar quirky electric lines. From there Jones and Holland dive into a groove so simple, yet perfectly atmospheric that Frisell is able to dance between folk, blues, jazz, and experimental guitar sounds with perfect stylistic continuity. In this way, the album lacks a stylistic theme like Frisell's other works, but demonstrates his formidable abilities as an improviser and composer better than almost any other album to date.

5 Star Rating  "Beautiful music by Bill Frisell"2007-02-06

Bill Frisell definitely had a vision when assembling this project, as the entire set possesses a thematic quality not typical of modern jazz innovators. I must admit I had never heard of Frisell prior to the purchase of this album, and it was the sidemen Dave Holland and Elvin Jones that prodded the acquisition. This music is easily accessible by fans outside of the jazz genre, having a bluesy-country-ambient-"swingish" jazz guitar trio thing going on for it. I cannot think of any better way to put it in words.

The trio pulls this musical excursion off like the pros that they are, making me a new fan to Frisell's music. Incidentally the album artwork on here is very striking. I'd love to have some back-story to the artwork, as it is very unique. Slow and deceptively melancholy, this classic will surely come to be revisited in the years to come. This album is well worth the price of admission. Enjoy it.

This album is phenomenal. There are so many good reviews on this album and I don't think that I could write a better review than what has already been done but I just wanted to add one small thing. This album is by far my favorite album to make love to. You should try it sometime. Throw the album on repeat and your all set. I also like to play it along with the album "Dummy" by Portishead and sometimes even a little Keith Jarett solo improv. They all make for a good night!!! This album is essential... Enjoy!!!
