Well written, produced, directed and acted. Hugh Dancy is as good an actor as you'll see and vastly under-rated. I liked him ever since Black Hawk Down. I rank Jodhi May's acting as her finest role to date, though the entire ensemble is also top drawer. The story arc pays off very well. This movie what I was looking for present.
My friend was exited receive and see this movie.
Thank you,
very much.........
Three stars for the wonderful Gwendolyn character in "Daniel Deronda," and zero for the rest of it. This is one of the few George Eliot books I haven't read, so the DVD was my first time for the story.
All I can say is that Romola Garai, who plays the aforementioned wonder, Gwendolyn, is an absolute revelation! What a gorgeous woman! I can't recall any actress who has the regal bearing and exquisite form to wear period costumes so well.
She's not just a clotheshorse, though. Her character is self-centered and selfish, and the first two episodes are full of Gwendolyn and her antics, including her creepy husband. It is THE best part of the entire miniseries, bar none!
Garai just blows every other actor out of the water, including Hugh Dancy, who plays Deronda (his main acting technique seems to be lip quivering.)
The Gwendolyn story is what's interesting about this; the Jewish plotline is, well, utterly stupid. Deronda is supposed to be some kind of 19th century Jewish messiah? And Mordecai, the weird TB patient, knows it? Oh puhleeze.
Jodhi May who plays Mordecai's long long sister, Mirah, is another excellent actress. Considering how annoying the whole Jewish subplot was, she handled the part much, much better than anyone had a right to expect. SHE was THE only interesting character in the Jewish angle of the story.
What a shame Eliot didn't just blow the whole Jewish messiah thing and stick with Gwendolyn! I could even have tolerated Mr. Quivering Lips if it was a means to discuss or even better, SHOW more Gwendolyn and her life and times!
I highly recommend Episodes One and Two. Episode Three, the wrap up, is absolutely idiotic (except for the fun parts with Gwendolyn and Creepy Hubby's boating accident!)
More Gwendolyn!!

I liked this movie very much. Love can be satisfying and bitter, but for Daniel, he made a very hard and heartfelt decision in persuing his own heritage. That was more important to him then that of belonging to a different class of society with great statue. He was content with who he was and used his education for a good purpose.

I enjoyed this movie and, since I have never read the book, I probably enjoyed it the more for not having done so. It actually makes me want to read this book. The acting was good and the story held my attention but it was rather melancholy at the end, I thought. For the price of the movie I don't feel ripped off. It was a good buy and I am sure I will view it again in the future.
If you like BBC Classic Dramas as much as I do, you will probably like it. If you are not into the genre, then this is probably not the best one to introduce you to the genre.
