Here is what people are saying about the The Thirteenth Floor
5 Star Rating  "This dvd is not widescreen!!!"2010-07-19
- Reviewed By Bryan
This dvd is not double sided! Graphics (a picture of the cover art) covers one full side of the disc. The other side contains the movie, which is a full screen (1.33:1 ratio) only presentation. Why some people keep insisting they're recieving double sided discs is beyond me. Perhaps they want people to make the same mistake they did. My disc was full screen and according to the IMDB website no widescreen version exists. (except on blueray)
As far as the movie itself goes it's a great film which deserves 5 stars.

I just finished watching this movie, and it was wonderful! The plot is very well done and keeps you wondering until the plot is finally revealed at the end! It is a must see.

5 Star Rating  "One of the Best Alternate Reality films SPOILERS"2010-06-07
- Reviewed By Jalus from australia
Ive had a chance finally to view the film at home, in australia, after having to get a DVD (region 2)from britain.Luckily it plays on my Laptop.
This is a really underrated film about world within worlds. An existential film noir where the gumshoe is a scientist, and the secret to be uncovered is really astonishing.
I was surprised by the very Dickian story of a scientist creating a virtual reality system, murdered for knowing too much, and sends the hero off on a similar voyage of discovery; a mysterious woman, a dogged police detective...
What is our world also wasnt real?
Like and unlike the excellent Matrix and Dark City, this film makes a very diffent statement about what our world is what reality is. It seems to lie between the two, but there is no superhero self discovery...this makes the film more relatable.
There are issues with the film in that the dead scientist fears he may be killed...but by whom? And how does he come to learn the true nature of his world...Perhaps he does so thru creating his own simulated world, and finally connects the dots.
and why does the older scientist have a pronouced german accent if he had lived his youth in Los Angeles? HMMM
Well acted and produced wih excellent production design, and a surprisingly charming love story. The actors are terrific as is the music and pacing. and the end song Erase Rewind has a canny poignancy.
The actors were chosen for being able to play different characters.

3 Star Rating  "Good Movie- bad encryption."2010-02-01
- Reviewed By doc Smith from Gallifrey
This is a good movie dealing with reality on several levels. The scenes are recreations of Los Angeles from the 30's and are quite remarkable.
This DVD does have another of Sony's odd encryption schemes designed more to frustrate the user than to protect the movie.

5 Star Rating  "A tech-noir treat."2010-01-15
- Reviewed By Michael Gmirkin from Beaverton, Oregon, USA
This movie was right along the lines of what I was looking for. Lately I've been quite into the Neo Noir and Tech Noir genres. What I had hoped for in eXistenZ, but been disappointed, was realized quite smartly in The Thirteenth Floor.

There's just enough technology used in the movie that it could potentially be considered "tech noir," but moreover it falls squarely into the category of "neo noir," playing with notions of identity, sanity, what defines 'humanity' or the 'soul' in a world of increasingly complex computer simulations made in our image.

I won't give away any of the plot twists and turns. I'll simply say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I liked the style of the movie and some of the themes presented. I was relatively surprised by the ending twists, though I caught the gist based on a hint they placed just before the explicit expository sequence where it's all explained in some length.

I give it an A+. I don't think it's quite fair to classify it alongside The Matrix, as they really are quite different movies. Though they do share a few themes, certainly (virtual worlds, identity, etc.). This is less an actioner than it is a stylized neo noir-ish mystery.

5 Star Rating  "The Thirteenth Floor - a great but overlooked movie"2009-11-20
- Reviewed By Carl the Viking from Tucson, AZ USA
Of all the "Surprise! Reality is not what you think it is" films that came out around this time, the Thirteenth Floor seemed to slip under the radar while movies like "the Matrix" that had bigger actors and more special affects seemed to get all the attention. This is unfortunate because 13th Floor was well-written and had great character development, and although the plot twist was mildly predictable, the story itself is more than enough to carry its own weight. If you like your sci-fi movies to go a little deeper than mere eye candy, give this one a try.

"Because of superstition there is no 13th floor in buildings but come on...people on the 14th floor know what floor they're REALLY on..." - Mitch Hedberg
