"A guilty pleasure" | 2010-02-02 |

This is the story of the most dysfunctional family in the West. There's George Washington McLintock (played by John Wayne), the hard-drinking, overly-confident cattle baron; Katherine McLintock (Maureen O'Hara), his estranged wife who is leading the life of the mega-wealthy; Becky McLintock (Stefanie Powers) his Eastern-educated daughter who has lost her sense of what is really important; and finally, there's a whole passel of goofy ranch-hands. Like Ching the cook (H.W. Gim) said, "Pretty crummy family, fighting all the time!"
OK, this movie is something of a guilty pleasure. Is it misogynist? Yeah, it is. I must say, my hat is off to Maureen O'Hara. The big climax of the movie, the chase scene, must have been somewhat hard to take. But, she did a great job and pulled off one of the best performances of her career.
In fact, the reason that this movie is still as popular as it is is a tribute to the writers, actors and director - they really pulled together a well-made and extremely funny movie. Check your seriousness at the door, and sit down to watch a goofy and extremely funny movie. I have enjoyed this movie for many years, and expect to go on enjoying it for many more to come!

""McLintock!" is a great gift for the John Wayne fan in your family." | 2010-01-30 |

Years ago, my dad purchased a VHS copy of "McLintock!" only to find out it was a bootleg copy. Eventually, he would find a new version released from the estate of John Wayne to replace the bad copy. Thankfully, Paramount has released an authorized version of the John Wayne movie on DVD and the difference is amazing. My dad could finally see the film in letterbox format (a more superior viewing experience than the "edited for your television" view for VHS) and in crystal clear sound and picture. Also the extras like the commentary track are wonderful. I never thought I would see my dad watch any movie with audio commentary on let alone "McLintock!".
My one major complaint is that this DVD came in late due to the people I purchased this DVD from. Hopefully, this will not happen again next time I purchase a DVD from certain sellers on Amazon.com. All in all, this is a great holiday gift for the John Wayne fan in your Family. |

| We just got this the other day - really looked forward to watching it. My husband & I are big fans of the movie. It was such a letdown. Our old VHS copy is a better quality than this DVD. We thought that the DVD version would be much clearer and better sound quality. That couldn't have been further from the truth. We're very disappointed, and quite frankly disappointed that Amazon is even selling this DVD. Don't waste your money - worst quality DVD I've ever seen. |

| This is a finely focused and astute script turned into a funny, touching, honest film...riding on the iconic shoulders of John Wayne. Under the mostly bubbling surface lay some deep themes that are exposed but not dwelt upon. Comedy seems to work best when there is a semi-tragic base for it to take flight from. If you are of a certain age and grew-up in John Wayne World then this film will be a real treat. |

No, you could never get away with making a film like MCCLINTOCK! during these politically correct times--a Western version of Shakespeare's timeless 'The Taming of the Shrew' complete with its female lead character being publicly humiliated (meaning she gets spanked). NOW would never let something like that happen these days, even when presented in good clean fun and with tongue firmly in cheek, which is what lends such rustic charm to this John Wayne classic.
Wayne plays G.W. McClintock, a rancher/entrepreneur who, after years of hardship building his cattle empire, is now living the high life. The beautiful Maureen O'Hara plays Mrs. McClintock who, now that she's been exposed to eastern culture and living, finds her husband crude, obnoxious, and boorish--yet still loves him. The chemistry between the two (as it is in all their films together) comes as easy as breathing air; in fact, Wayne wears this role like an old glove: in every scene he is exceedingly comfortable. The two of them are pure fun to watch.
But what is more enjoyable about MCCLINTOCK! is its plethora of other speaking roles, all of them done well. Some of my favorites include Chill Wills, Jack Kruschen, Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers, Strother Martin, Jerry Van Dyke, Yvonne De Carlo, and Big John Hamilton (as you can tell, this film contains lots of characters). MCCLINTOCK! is a sprawling, feel-good Western that is definitely one of The Duke's best--even though its misogynist bent might offend those who are a little sensitive.

| I would like to say that despite the fact that there are inferior DVD transfers of McLintock! out there from other video companies, the John Wayne Foundation's endorsement of this particular version (with its high-quality color, sound, and picture integrity) make it the only version worth considering for purchase. You will want to watch it again and again! |
