Here is what people are saying about the The Duellists
4 Star Rating  "A rational man forced to face a lunatic"2009-06-05

I'll be brief, since there are already many reviews.

Beautifully filmed, and great acting by Keitel and Carradine. For me, this was the perfect portrayal of a rational man, bound by honor (Carradine), forced to deal with a lunatic (Keitel) obsessed with killing him. Carradine cannot run and must fight, based on the code to which he adheres, but cannot bring himself to kill his opponent when he has no reason to do so.

I'm no expert on fencing, but the swordplay stood out, and had the ring of truth. Not Errol Flynn. Brutal combat.

Definitely worth watching.

5 Star Rating  "A gorgeous authenticity"2009-04-28

It is mind-boggling to discover that this film was made on a budget of 900K. It carries a strong sense of authenticity (the times and the places). And the filming is genius,.... haunting and beautiful. It's primarily about two very different men. One full of ego and hatred, feeling he has a lot to prove. The other,... resigned to his fate as an army officer, but with no desire to prove anything. But neither will he relinquish his dignity or honor. And the latter is plagued by the former for many years, and places, and wars. At this time in Europe it is all very believable, and it is not overdone or sensationalized. The ending is not what anyone will be expecting, and some may not like it. But it rang true to me. The performances where quite adequate, but this is really a director's film. All things considered, I thought this was a hell of a piece of film-making.

3 Star Rating  "Very good, but not a masterpiece"2009-04-20

This is indeed a very good movie, astonishingly made if you think the low bugetd it had. But I do not think it's the masterpiece a lot of people think it is.

It has passed the test of time, no doubt about that, due to its incredible photography.

4 Star Rating  "The Duelists - a review"2009-04-12

"The Duelists" - a short story by Polish author Joseph Conrad (known mostly for his sea stories), is a film about two hussar officers in Napoleon's army who fight a series of duels over a minor slight. Keith Carradine is more than willing to forget the matter, but Harvey Keitel is vindictive and will not let it drop until either he or Carradine are dead.

The film is wonderfully shot, its existing light scenes are as evocative as Kubrick's big budget film "Barry Lyndon." There is a lot there for the Napoleonics junkie to delight in, such as the fencing master teaching Carradine (these were usually enlisted men who taught their officers how to fence), the regimental surgeon (Tom Conti). However, when I first saw the film I screamed at the screen, the Imperial Eagle on the shakos, or "cuckoo," did NOT appear until 1804! Grrr!

Nevertheless, the actors gave terrific performances. Unlike some people, I did not mind the accents - different countries have different regions, each with its own accents and verbiage. I was swept away then when I saw the film, and am swept away now with the DVD. All in all, I thought the film did an excellent job portraying an unexplored facet of Napoleon's army, that of dueling, which was rampant. Too bad it did not do well commercially (Americans prefer crashes and crass sex crap), but among Napoleonic junkies, the film is a hit!

The Duellists stands out in writing, plot and action. It is one of the best filmed movies ever. Each scence could literally be stopped and framed. The music score compliments and moves the story forward. The cast is superb. A film that can be viewed over and over again. No gimmicks, just straight forward excellent film making.

5 Star Rating  "Add my five to the list"2008-08-05

This is a GREAT film. Buy it, watch it again and again. Someone says it is based on a story by Joseph Conrad. I am not sure of this, but I do know there is good reason to believe this story or something very much like it happened in real life.

Most people know who Ridley Scott is and what his movies are. While this movie is smart and beautiful in every detail, I think it is important to remind people that this was Scott's first movie outside his advertising career and it is not on the scale of Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.

Nevertheless, it is a great film even though it was produced for less than $400,000 in 1977 dollars.

The French in the early years of the Age of Napoleon were fanatic duelists. There were many deaths in duels when the Army was encamped -- especially in 1804 and 1805 when the Grand Armee' was sick of drilling and parades while waiting to invade England at Boulogne sur Mer and again in 1806/7 during the occupation of Bavaria after the success at Austerlitz but before the triumph over the Prussians at Jena.

The French Hussars (the Second and the Seventh are featured in this film) were notorious for riding to the lines of the British enemy in Spain and asking for a single combat duel just to break the boredom of the wait between battles.

A great deal is said about the psychology and progression of the French culture during the Age of Napoleon. This movie gives a penetrating account of that. This is a movie that will be watched many times with great enjoyment and it will spark lots of good conversation with friends.
