| After several very good and elucidatory reviews, I will humbly add up that I liked the film due to its rich production, watching Colin Firth acting once more, Reese Witherspoon's gracious British accent and of course the scenery! From Oscal Wilde, I had only read "The Picture of Dorian Gray". I enjoyed the comic side of this important writer, even though I saw it through the film only. Now, I am curious and intend to buy the book to read the original play! |

This video arrived in mint condition and far sooner than I had expected.
As far as the story goes - it is simply very funny and very well acted. Colin Firth and the rest of the cast are the best!
There are nuances that one would miss on the first viewing of this film. On a second and third viewing, I am still finding more things to laugh at. For instance, after Jack and Algy have sung their song, Jack accidentally plucks one note on the guitar, and Algy promptly elbows him.
It is a farce, among farces - don't miss seeing it. |

What a fun movie this is!! Brilliant male cast! Dame Judi Dench stole the show, what a wonderful actress. This is sure to be a classic! If you want to hear colin and rupert SING, then get this movie! The longer version of the song they are singing can be heard during the credits.
Brilliantly directed, casted and acted! A must buy |

| This is one of my favorite movies. A great cast takes full advantage of every wonderful sentence of Oscar Wilde's dialogue. The decor is splendid, the actors perfectly chosen and the net result is a better performance than you will ever see on a stage. The play is one of the greatest comedies in the English language: It is a joy to watch in this extraordinary film. If you do not have it already whatever is keeping you from buying it? This you will want to see many times over and over (we watch it several times a year) |

I am a great fan of films from classic english literature. The Importance of Being Ernest has been done several times however this is my favorite. The casting is exquisite and nearly perfect. The direction, the dialog is wonderful. Very humorous in a dry english way which I particularly enjoy. Refreshing to leave contemporary films with obscenities, sexual situationa and violence to view a formal gentler time of life. Wonderful film for children especially in these times of relaxed manners , to have an example of how people used to act towards each other and react to controversial situations. I highly recommend this film for everyone of all ages. |

| I've loved Oscar Wilde for as long as i can remember. I wrote my senior thesis on him and have seen every version of every Wilde play I can manage. One thing that has bothered me about every Oscar Wilde play put to film so far is how dry and flat they portray his work. His plays are light hearted and fun, not serious and boring. I was hoping this film with its impressive cast would finally get it right. Nope. I will say it is better than most but Rupert Everrett comes off as creepy (my 7 year old niece ran from the room) and mumbles most of his lines. This movie does attempt some of the goofy spirit of the play but it often comes off as dark. It has all sorts of weird accents like hot air balloons or tattoos that I like but may bother some people. It definitely is not period accurate if you care about such things. The movie does get better as it goes and picks up the pace. If you like Oscar Wilde or movies with Colin Firth then you might love this movie. If you do not like such things you may be hopelessly lost and confused by this movie. It's ok but could easily be better and by all rights should be better with such a cast. |

| Another delightful comedy romp starring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth. A great presentation of the wit and twists of an Oscar Wilde book, full of entertaining British humor and upper class shenigans and snobbery, beautiful scenery, beautiful costumes on lovely ladies whose charm, desires and wit combine with a mind and plan of their own. Funny and interesting twist leads to a dramatic and hilarious ending whereby most if not all are happy-ever-after. A totally entertaining way to survive the winter blahs. Not for the very young viewer due to a mature theme and somewhat sexual dialogue. |
