| Nicholson and Polanski were in rare form when they conspired to put out this film, which was successful both commercially and artistically. Looking at the film today on DVD, it still holds up as a timeless classic. |

| The "Chinatown" DVD was an item that we had shopped for and found through Amazon. DeeVeeDees offered this brand-new product at a very low price. The item was carefully packaged and shipped as well. We certainly recommend this seller! |

Chinatown is hands down one of my favorite movies. Acting, directing, screenplay, everything comes together here. I pretty much love everything with Jack Nicholson but this one particularly struck me. Made in his younger days. The part was written for him. I love film noir, and this to me is a great example. Perhaps even people who might be turned off by older movies could start with this modern noir film as an introduction to the style, and hopefully come back for more.
I am not familiar with other editions of Chinatown but this one seems great, and I found the featurettes very interesting.
Took advantage of amazon prime trial offer and the shipment came ridiculously fast. I am very pleased with the entire experience. |

| This is definitely what film making is all about. Well-thought story, outstanding acting, and incredible character development. No amount of positive superlatives can be laid upon this film. 5 plus stars. |

Amazon should review its policy of combining reviews. There are several here that say the DVD transfer is poor. That is in reference to other, older DVD Releases. If you are buying the Special Collector's Edition you'll find it just great!
Roman Polanski did not want to return to Hollywood after the murder of Sharon Tate, but came back to do this at the request of Jack Nicholson. Robert Towne had passed on writing the screen play for Robert Redford's 'Great Gatsby' because he didn't want to kill his career by abusing a literary classic. He had written this screen play specifically for Jack Nicholson who was his friend and ex-roommate.
Fortunately for Polanski the film was produced by Robert Evans who had the genius of letting great directors direct. Polanski notes in the documentaries that Evans more than anyone else made this film a great movie.
Although it was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, Towne was the only winner for original screen play. Guess what movie won that year, 1974? 'The Godfather II,' kind of stiff competition.
Polanski now says than after 'The Pianist' this is probably his best movie, even though at the time he was just anxious to get it over and get back to Europe.
There are no mis-steps in this that I can see. There has been a lot of debate over the ending, but I can't imagine it any other way. A truly great movie. |

"Is it possible? A deep and subtle film noire." | 2009-04-28 |

This is one of my favorite Polanski films, which is saying a lot. Unlike the two-dimensional characters that you get in the FN genre, these characters are realistic, troubled, and flawed. Nicolson is the best: a PI because he had to leave the police force, he is deeply angry and cynical. But in his heart, he does want to help. He is skilled as an investigator and smart, but gets in way over his head. Dunaway, the femme fatale who is the only person with a clear idea of diong good, also defies simple labels. Their performances are amongst the finest of their careers, so good they have to been seen and savored more than once. Huston is also good as a sleazeball, but even he adds aspects to the character that make the role unforgettable.
This is one of the films that is so interesting and moving you can watch it at each phase of your life and find nuance you missed. Recommended with the greatest enthusiasm. |
