I watch a lot of english movies.Although it is not my own language I never seem to have problems. This picture should be rated 5 stars by me, but without the subtitles I understood only half of it.I thought to be clever and bought the book but even that was not in English written. I hope that one day I can buy this one with subtitles.

It's difficult for me to not be emotionally involved and objective with this film because after viewing it, my emotions will forever be more accessible to stimuli supplied by a simple Love Story (gay, straight or both). I laughed, I cried... the closing scene produced deep sobs from a part of my soul untouched too long by too many films that came across as faked and/or shallow.
A wonderful story played by an amazingly talented group of actors. |

| Very interesting film. In the mist of all the chaos, a young came to realize that love is stronger than hate in prison and happiness also exists as well. Shawn and Danny gave excellent performance. |

| I had seen this movie a long time ago. I made the mistake of returning it to blockbuster online. When I went to try to rent it again, it was on the list for a "very long wait", so I bought it here at Amazon, no problem. If you're having problems finding a book or movie, try Amazon! |

| Brendan Behan would be rolling in his grave and would come back to haunt the makers of this movie. I have read the book at least 5 times and will read it again. Any resemblance to the book is purely accidental. The director of this travesty is trying to emulate unHolywood's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN with his depiction of homosexuality. There is nothing in the book about Brendan being a 'switch hitter'. Charlie was probably gay in the book, but he certainly kept 99% of his sexuality in his trousers. The book had no kissing and fondling. A real put off!. I have a gay son, so it's not that I have anything against gay people. I was also in the British Navy and had gay advances made to me. They could have made a great movie if they had not strayed SO far from Brendan's real character as to make him unrecognizable. They made the main thrust of the movie about sex and a conflicted Brendan having to choose between the Warden's daughter and Charlie. NEVER HAPPENED in the book. Read the book and you'll have a great experience. I hope someone will one day make this movie again, and keep to the story. |

What a pity. This film could have been brilliant, but the writers betrayed the books. Certainly, Hatosy's portrayal is excellent and underrated. But, the film company has made a great effort to present this as a gay film. Yes, there is some queer content, as the hero discovers his bisexual feelings for a gay sailor. But, like in the films and books of old, his love is doomed and the gay character must be punished with death. While this may actually have happened, the screenwriter and director could have focused on the positive instead of making bisexuality seem like a burden that robs one of all love.
Additionally, there are many events that transpire that could be watched in any teen movie from the 1980s - the headmaster's daughter, the game that brings mates together, and so forth.
What could have been a brilliant film that sought to understand bisexuality instead squelched understanding and went for sentimentality. |
