| I've been a fan of this OVA series since '96, when I was first turned onto it by the Anime Society at the University of Texas at Austin (Yes, that's what they called themselves). Those were great days for anime, not a lot of people were aware of the genre yet, so it was still a very subversive (and cool) thing to be an otaku. I promptly picked up the first seven episodes on VHS at A-kon that year, and over the years, I've lost this tape and that, until I've only got a few episodes left. But I digress. I think it's wonderful to have the whole thing on DVD. Say what you want of the follow-ups and TV series, nothing tops the original. I recommend this series to anyone who hasn't seen it. |

| I'm not much of an anime person anymore. At least, that was until I thought of Tenchi Muyo. I remember how I loved the story and how attached I was to the characters. This series has a heart to it. I just wish some cartoon makers out there would become inspired by what the directore of this series has done. |

| I have always loved Tenchi Muyo and all of it's series, but this is the best (the original). I received this box set in perfect condition and it is abosutely beautiful. The episodes are are not only funny, but they make you just wish you could just drop in. The best part I think is that this is the REAL version, not cut at all... it's the way it was supposed to be seen. |

"This set the standard for both quality and storylines for other Anime" | 2006-02-23 |

I love this show! I don't care if anybody thinks Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo is better because they're not. I mean they're both great shows, but Tenchi Muyo set standards so high in terms of storytelling, imagination and emotional impact that I don't think any Anime will achieve any time soon.
This is the first and probably the best of the three other Tenchi series, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are both equally sublime but this particular series is probably the most influential and least confusing. I don't know how to explain it but it has a unique "touch" to it.
Anyway, the story is about teenaged boy named Tenchi Masaki. Tenchi is the grandson of a Juraian prince named Yosho who had imprisoned a "demon" named Ryoko, who is a 5,000 year old wanted criminal that was imprisoned for 700 years by Yosho and gets accidentally released by Tenchi. But after losing a battle to Tenchi (or more importantly Tenchi's ancestral sword that comes to life when he's under attack) she moves in with him. But then Ayeka and Sasami, the 1st and 2nd princess of Jurai, come to earth in search of Ayeka's half Bother/fiance and Ryoko.
I don't want to give too much of the story away, but you'll just have to see it for yourself. Don't worry you won't be sorry. Few Animes have captured my attention or even make an impression on me, but this blew me away and continues to do so again and again. This show actually made me care about the story and the characters. There are happy moments that make you laugh, and sad moments that make you sad sympathetic. this is definitly worth your money. |

| In the beginning of the series they introduce a boy named tenchi and his grandpa. Tenchi is searching for a set of keys that are hidden by his grandpa that leads to the forbidden cave where it was sait that a demon sleeps there. Sure enough tenchi gets a hold of these keys and is on his way to that cave. Once there he finds this old sword that was said to have defeated this demon and without knowing he released the demon. The demon turned out to be a woman whos name was ryoko. After that point all the other characters start to come in. They introduce princess Ayeka and her sister Sasami. Then comes Mihoshi...which isn't exactly the best character on the series. After a couple of episodes they end up meeting the enemy Kagato. Tenchi then arrives to the scene and uses his hidden powers known as the light hawk sword and defeats kagato....which then splits his ship in half. The princess is searching constantly for her brother Yosho so that they could get married...but thankfully they're only half brother and sister. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys seeing anime and has the patience for this type. |

This 14-episode series, made from the First and Second OVA story-arches, is still the best of the Tenchi settings. In it Tenchi Masaki meets the legendary demoan, Ryoko, a galactic space pirate. He also meets a couple of Royal Princesses, Ayeka and Sasami, a Galaxy Police Detective, Mihoshi, an alien creature, the cute Ryo-Ohki, and the greatest scientific genius in the universe, WASHU! Mystery, space combat and comedy all in one. Tenchi soon gets into a lot of trouble as he discovers the TRUE history of his family and about the power locked up in his blood. This collection is the best, even with all the new volumes and improved collections that are now out. The first two DVDs have the first 13 episodes, plus the bonus 14th episode, and the third DVD is the Tenchi Encyclopedia with interviews, info files, trailers and more. This is the perfect way to caught up on the series without paying a lot of cash. Better do it soon, because the Third OVA should be available any day now! |

| . . . I'm going to quibble. In the editorial review above, the reviewer says that the Tenchi OVA reunites the cast of the TV show, but that's not so. The OVA was the original; the TV series "Tenchi Universe" and "Tenchi Tokyo" came afterward and made some radical changes in the plot lines, characters, and histories. The original Tenchi OVAs are far superior to the different TV series, movies, and specials. OVA 1 is episodes 1-6, OVA 2 is episodes 6-13, and OVA 3 is slowly being released at the time of this writing. The character relationships and backstory are far better in the OVA. The more that's revealed about the galaxy-wide civilizations that are hinted at in the series, and the more infomation that is revealed about earth's place in this scheme, the more fascinating this saga becomes. So much anime doesn't make you think and want to dig for detail. The Tenchi OVAs are so deep and complex that it seems that the stories should never end. |

"The Most Original and Best of the Tenchi Timelines" | 2004-05-12 |

| This Tenchi Muyo - OAV Set is the timeline that is truest to how its creator originally intended. Although the other alternate timelines, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are entertaining, the OAV timeline is the most compelling and has much more depth in meaning and leaves much more open to future development. In fact the continuation of the Tenchi Muyo series now just airing in Japan is following where this OAV series left off. This timeline reveals the nature of Tenchi, Ryoko and Washu in the most cohesive explanation. It leaves far greater room for character growth than in Tenchi Universe or Tenchi in Tokyo. Tenchi is revealed relatively early on to have extraordinary depth of powers that are only just being tapped. Ryoko is allowed to show much depth in character. Introduced as a destructive demon woman, we see some very vunerable sides of her character and a very unique relationship with Washu. Washu is subtlely hinted to have great wisdom and some hidden powerful side to her well beyond her scientific genius. Even Princess Sasami is shown to have some very special secret hidden power. The main downside to this timeline is that so much is left open that you are left at the end feeling like you have watched only the first volume in a triology. The bad news is that the OAV sequel is only just coming out in Japan and therefore it may be years before a dubbed version hits the US. If you haven't seen any of the other Tenchi timeline DVD sets, this is definitely the one to start with. |
