"The Not Very Sinful Nuns of Saint Whatever" | |

| The nuns in this flick were not very bad. They were plenty stupid, but not very sinful. The real evil in this film is the holy ineptitude with which it was produced. The only significantly bad people in the story, the abbess and the principal inquisitor, were merely crazy. Nunsploitation is supposed to be about sex, and there just was not much in this movie; what there was looked oafish and blaze'. The plot was trivial and at the same time too fantastic for anyone to suspend even a moment of disbelief. It pretended to a kind of Romeo and Juliet theme, but it was just a farce in comparison to even a high school play written by undereducated teens. The film could have been comic in this regard, but it was carried off so ineptly that it failed on that score too. All in all, it was a waste of money and time since even the women appeared less than pleasing -- no great beauty to marvel at, no well shaped figures to roil the blood, no alabaster bossoms, no face to launch a thousand ships. It was tedious. |

| I don't know why there are so many reviews blasting this film. As far as naked nun movies go. It's really one of the best I've seen, and I've seen allot personally. True it's more of a slur against the catholic church than a horror film, but it does have this romantic understory amidst all the lying, screwing and murder. I thought it was actually a well written story, and the insane priest was a really wacked out performance. The ladies were nice and the walling them up in the temple was freaky to say the least. You can't go into these films expecting brilliance. But this film was a little more tastefully done so to speak. It still has some great moments non the less and a decent ending. I think this one should get a better buzz. |

"not as bad as all that" | |

| This film could be called a sleazy nunspoitation/sexploitation flick, which to some extent it definately is, but there is also something much more serious going on in this film. First of all, this movie treats the subject matter more seriously than most historic films today (especially American films) would ever dare. The climax, supposedly based on The Devils of Loudon, is loosely based on fact. In the chilling climax, nuns accused of unholy acts are walled into the convent where they are confronted with starvation and madness. What many viewers may not know is that convents, in the middle ages, were where families would send unwanted daughters...daughters who failed to land a husband, daughters who in some way disgraced the family (by getting pregnant for example), daughters the family could not afford to support, etc. These were regular girls with regular sex drives. When abandoned by their families and imprisoned in convents they would often turn to lesbianism, which if discovered, would be deemed unholy by the church, despite the fact that priests would often visit convents to be serviced (I am being discreet, but I think my readers know what I mean....Didn't Russell once write that Augustus fathered dozens of children because of his visits to convents?) So, this film could be seen as sleazy, or it could be seen as courageously accurate in a historical way. It also, by the way, has one of the absolute best and most beautiful soundtracks I have ever heard, kind of a funky cross between Lalo Schifrin and beautiful Ennio Morricone. If anyone knows where I could obtain a copy of the soundtrack of this film I would appreciate an email! |

First of all, I am tired of people criticizing these Eurosleaze/horror films as if they were expecting some Spielberg epic. No one but NO ONE watches these for the "story", okay? Complaining about the lack of story singles you out as a doofus, because you are talking to the wrong crowd. I preach to the converted, and as far as this film goes it has only a smattering of what we're looking for in this genre. The nudity is there...kind of. Not a lot of it, but enough to warrant some interest in the film throughout it's entire length. I was hoping this would be similar to "The Convent of Hell", an erotic graphic novel which tells the story of a group of nuns which mistakenly summons the devil, who then goes about raping them and turning them into nymphomaniacs. Not quite the plot here, as it happens. A dash of very minor and brief lesbianism (one mild scene) is the best on offer here, and a "sex" scene between the abbess and the "hero" is completely forgettable. The end of the film, which is awash with topless nuns in some sort of weird, possessed freak out, is a decent climax. The main nun--a young girl falsely accused of murdering another nun (which is the basis of the story, if you care)--is the best looking, but unfortunately has almost the least on display. Of course, something which the director calls "violence" is present, but....whatever. Towards the end of the film a topless nun hanging is as extreme as it gets. However, there is a stirring moment when the nuns' true spiritual allegiance is revealed by a creepy painting on the wall late in the movie. The dvd notes claim it is all remastered, and maybe it is. And boy are they proud of how they transferred the audio to DAT and reprocessed it! The trailer for the film is in Italian with no subtitles, and Redemption has added some sort of 5 minute prologue during which some goth girl introduces the film (see editorial review above). Now, it's great that Redemption has taken such an active interest in their products, but several minutes of jabbering by some lady with white contacts trying to be scary is just stupid. Skip to Chapter 2 where the film starts. In closing: it isn't Jean Rollin or "Bacchanales Sexuelles", but it's adequate. |

| Although it isn't actually a horror film, it's still worth checking out if you're into the whole Euro horror/sex film thing. I am and I quite enjoyed this mix of nunsploitation and melodrama. It's better made than most, and not badly acted either. Give it a go. |
