| Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. The menus are extremely well designed and the commentaries are entertaining and insightful. It's filled to the brim with extras not found on any other edition (not even the more recent "special edition"). Instead of one long making-of documentary, you are treated to several smaller documentaries devoted to specific topics. This makes it easier to watch what you want. I was astounded at the sophistication of this DVD, especially considering it came out at a time when DVD's were a relatively new phenomena and just starting to come into their own. It demonstrated early-on Disney's capability of designing DVD's that are sophisticated and ahead of the curve. I wish they would do that with all their DVD's. |

| I didnt think it would be that great but it is actually very sweet and endearing. The animation is top notch and the voice acting is wonderful. Kids will love this movie, as will adults. It feels very modern and new but it still maintains the classical 'Disney feel'. |

| We own a lot (a LOT) of Disney animated DVDs, and our kids watch them often. Some (like Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame) get viewed once and then shelved because the music's crummy, the story's slow or dumb, and the kids just don't want to see them again. Tarzan, though, gets viewed again and again. Thank goodness it's a great, watchable story. Lots of action, wonderful job by Minnie Driver voicing Jane, pretty good Phil Collins music, all combine to make this an enjoyable watch. I'd recommend it to anybody looking for a good gift for young kids. |

| Disney brings the legendary story of the Lord of the Apes to animation with excellent results. The film follows the story of Tarzan, a young baby orphaned and alone in the jungle. After being found by a kindly gorilla named Kala, Tarzan is adopted into the gorilla family and raised as one of them. As he grows up, he attempts to prove himself to his family, most specifically the family's patriarch, Kerchak. This becomes even more difficult when more humans come into the jungle, including a spirited Englishwoman named Jane Porter. As he begins to fall in love with her, his loyalties are divided and he must choose whether to stay with his gorilla family or remain with Jane. The film is excellent, but, to me at least, doesn't seen to really take off until Jane enters the picture half way through the story. Most of Tarzan's adventures with sidekicks Terk the gorilla and Tantor the elephant near the beginning of the film are not as interesting as many of the events later on. The music by Phil Collins is great, the animation stunning, and the relationships between both Tarzan and Jane and Tarzan and his adopted-parents are also well played as well. A very well crafted film and worthy of being called one of Disney's best. |

| Tarzan is easily the best Disney's done since the fantastic Hunchback of Notre Dame. It easily erases the bad feelings I had left over from the wretched Pocahantas, the mildly disappointing Hercules, and the only average Mulan. The visuals in this one are sharp and striking, the new animation techniques stand-out successes and the character designs refreshlingly unique. This Tarzan doesn't look like a bodybuilder, he looks like someone who's spent his life swinging around on vines. The story rumbles down the familiar Disney track, complete with sneering villain, noisy sidekicks (somebody buy Rosie O'Donnel a muzzle, please), death in the family, and all-around whiz-bang happy ending. Its strength is in making this old material fresh and keeping our interest even though we know where the story's going. The only reason I give it 3 stars instead of 4 is it came out the same summer as The Iron Giant. TIG rewrote the rule book and showed what can be done outside the Disney formula, making Tarzan seem timid for staying within it. |
