Here is what people are saying about the Walkabout
"Beautifully Shot, Sensational & One of a Kind" | 2009-08-26 |

I can't believe what some people are saying in the reviews listed here, giving this film a bad review is absolutely absurd. If you are curious about this film, perhaps the first thing that you should do is become familiar w/ Roeg as a director. I say this because like most of the great directors, he has a very unique & distinctive style. This film is no exception. I will say it's one of the most beautifully shot movies that I may ever see. The cinematography is remarkable. It literally makes me want to watch it over & over again. The bleak and strangeness of the story only adds to the film for me. If you are one that likes everything spelled out for you & over the top Hollywood adventure dramas, then this film is certainly NOT for you. In a sense I would compare some the the editing techniques to another one of Roeg's films, "Bad Timing" which has also become one of my favorites. Furthermore, This film says so much
about humanity and paints so many pictures in terms of growing up, self discovery & communication amongst human beings. Walkabout also suggests that we too are lost, disillusioned by dreams of our particular destination. When it is the journey that helps define who we are. |

The Bottom Line:
Walkabout has its share of interesting scenes, but the acting is often poor and the characters are not very believable (**spoiler** e.g. the children don't seem even mildly perturbed that their father tried to kill them and then killed himself); watch it for its beautiful scenes of the outback, not its coherency. |

"A stunning experience" | 2008-06-06 |

| The combination of Nicolas Roeg's vision, John Barry's resonantly beautiful soundtrack and Jenny Agutter's wonderfully sincere performance combine to impress a stunning, not to be forgotten experience. The last scene in the apartment with Agutter's character lost in remembrance and then the words of A.E. Housman's 'A Shropshire Lad' Poem XL place the film in perfect context--'The happy highways where I went and cannot come again'. Savor this experience. |

"Disappointed after reading great reviews" | 2008-04-01 |

| This movie got great reviews so I looked forward to watching it. I'm an Aussie living overseas so like to watch as many Aussie movies as I can, and almost always enjoy them. This was the exception. There were just too many parts of the movie where the story line didn't make a lot of sense. Then there was all the 70's "artsy" stuff which was a turn off. I will keep it in my collection but probably won't watch it again. |

| Many people are only capable of understanding big-budget typical hollywood movies that have a nice, tight, familiar plot structure and end with a nice resolution. If you are one of those people, you will hate Walkabout... But then again, you probably hated 2001: a Space Odyssey and therefore have no taste. If you believe that film is a legitimate form of high-art as opposed to mindless entertainment, then you can appreciate films that allow it's immages to speak to your sub-conscious without characters explaing everything in detail. Those people who fall into the latter category will appreciate Walkabout as I did. Roger Ebert considers this one of the "great films". |
