Here is what people are saying about the Heavy Metal
"Eyecandy: 1981" | 2009-11-11 |

On one hand, "Heavy Metal" is a tough, no excuses violent and rowdy relic from a bygone un-PC era. I love it for that -- and for all of the nostalgia the artwork elicits in me. This film came out when I was about seven and was considered by older kids to be the essence of cool. There is great atmosphere here, and the film really defies all genre categorizations; it is literally like the magazine came to life and created a film wholly outside of Hollywood's spoonfed narratives and genres. And like others have noted, it seems to be the bookend to an entire decade of fantasy and science-fiction illustration. Can't help but bring a tear to the eye!
Having said that, almost all of these stories offer great atmosphere and visuals, and while most begin with a brilliant idea -- they are uniformly missing good writers to give them much impact. At about 10-15 minutes long each they all just fizzle out, making this a frustrating film. Probably the worst example of this tendency is in the WWII segment, where the only thing that happens is that dead pilots turn to zombies. There is no twist, nothing. That's it! Probably my favorite segment is the last one which involves a warrior (seen on the poster) who avenges a fallen civilization. There is some very imaginative scenery and it actually tells a real story with a beginning, middle, and end -- and she is a compelling character.
So overall, 5 stars for the nostalia and atmosphere, barely 3 stars for the anemic storylines. But this is the real deal, and has more artistic integrity than much anything else of its kind since. |

| I saw this when I was 13 years old and loved it. Nowadays when I watch it I can see how poor the animation was, even though there were scenes that were done so-so (in particular the World War II bomber scene, where they filmed an actual bomber and traced the lines. The stoner story was awesome, Captain Sterrn, Den with his dork hanging out, and all sorts of beautiful full-bosomed women. Great soundtrack, not to mention lots of blood and gore and sex and four letter words. Makes me want to read the magazines. |

| This DVD played fine without skips or errors. The soundtrack was good as well. I have not seen this in a while. Good flick but not for the kids at all. The second Heavy Metal movie was not as good as this one. Not a bad buy but I don't think you'll find this one on sale. I finally broke down and paid the full price. |

"Escapist Fantasy" | 2009-06-25 |
| - Reviewed By User: A7GD4PIIR5E0R |
Heavy Metal is a perfect example of escapist fantasy. While all the characters are blatant exaggerations of the human form, it makes perfect sense being that this is the world of Heavy Metal - a world of pure male imagination. It never even attempts to be anything more than that.
Some people balk at the gratuitous violence and nudity in this film but they just don't understand that this film is stylistically lifted from the pages of comic book erotica, obviously inspired by the works of people like Frank Frazetta. That was the way fantasy was made back in those days and I must say, it a refreshing contrast to the effeminate men and pre-teen girl characters that dominate Japanime and modern fantasy.
By today's standards, the animation is rough but it is bearable and in some ways it adds to the nostalgic effect of it. Because its release date is 81, it gets lumped into the "80s animation" category (alongside movies like Akira that was 7 years and 7,000 miles away) but it seems to me to be more of a 70s flick both in theme and production values.
The bottom line is:
This movie is meant to make you dream, not to think. So sit back, burn one down, and take a ride - on Heavy Metal. |
