"More Humor Makes This A More Appealing Gremlins Film" | 2009-02-18 |

When this came out, it was an amazing movie because these Gremlin creatures looked so lifelike. They still look pretty real. What I like best about this film is that it took the hard edge off the first one and made it more of a comedy. To me, this sequel was more entertaining than the first film and one I would watch a lot more times. It's also family-friendly.
There are so many jokes and wild scenes in here it would many viewings to catch them all. For movie buffs, it's especially fun with all the references to other films in here.
However, it should be pointed out that there are still plenty of scenes where the gremlins are nasty and attack people, so the film is still horror-like in that respect. It may be played for comedic purposes, but these creatures are anything but friendly. In other words, there is still a bit of a hard edge in here for people who want that.
Phoebe Cates and Zach Galligan reprise their roles as the cute, small-town, wholesome (despite not being married, however) couple who live together who, of course, know all about these gremlins.
It was nice to see Jackie Joseph (of the original "Little Shop Of Horrors") again as well as some other well-known characters such as Christopher Lee, Robert Prosky, Dick Miller and Keye Luke.
The film just flies by, which tells you it's entertaining. |

"A sequel that wasn't needed but I find ok at best." | 2008-06-14 |

I'm stuck somewhere in the middle with this one. I don't like it too much but I definitely don't hate it. This sequel is much less darker than its predecessor. The original Gremlins was down right violent at times but still maintained a bit of its comedy nature. Gremlins 2 is all comedy and seems to be more of a parody of itself. In fact, it parodies several things.
Some of the characters from the original reprise their roles and I found them to be very welcomed. The story was stale but the movie was still fun due to the gremlins wild antics. I would say this one is more towards kids than the original. Those looking for some serious horror only, shouldn't even bother with this one. |

| The kids will enjoy it. I liked the first one better and actually so did my son. He said there wasn't enough of Gizmo in this one. |

Gremlins 2 The New Batch is great because it breaks the mold for most sequels in that it doesn't suck and improves on the original. The Gremlins themselves are even scarier thanks to genetic engineering, but are even more hilarious than before. They balanced horror and comedy brilliantly in this movie. Also the cameos were brilliant, from John Astin to Hulk Hogan.
An 80's type Donald Trump owns the 'Clamp' building. You got to love his logo, a big 'C' squishing the earth. Anyway through a series of unfortunate events in which Gizmo multiplies from a broken water fountain, the Gremlins overtake the building and every and any mayhem you can imagine ensues.
Plus we have the great Chritsopher Lee as a genetic scientist working in the building. When the Gremlins drink his experimetal liquids, we have brain Gremlins, vegetable Gremlins, bat Gremlins, and my favorite, the spider Gremlin.
This is a fun movie and not too scary for the kids. |

"Gremlins sequel piece of bizzare cinema" | 2007-12-28 |

Gremlins 2 existed in a time when sequels were running rampant. Some were good, some bad, but all were big Hollywood fare, ruling the multiplexes in the summertime.
Gremlins 2 could have easily succumbed to being a formulaic sequel, but instead takes a very different, somewhat absurd direction. In fact, its easily classifiable as a piece of very bizarre cinema - that is there are few words to describe it and even fewer movies to compare it to.
To be fair, there is something formulaic about the film - placing our heroes in the middle of Times Square, our young hero working for a big shot in Manhattan, and later sequences full of tons of our title characters. But the film has such strange bits that its in a class all its own.
For starters, Bugs and Daffy introduce the movie. That should set the mood right there. The movie is self referential, featuring a sequence where Leonard Maltin is reviewing the original film. The straw that breaks the camels back, however is when the Gremlins break the fourth wall. Well, they don't just break the fourth wall, they break the film. The second half of the film just screams "look what they let us get away with!" and is equatable to biting the hand that feeds you, poking fun at hollywood film excess.
What's nice is that the DVD keeps the theme going, inviting viewers to see all the little jokes they placed in the film, including a very notable easter egg involving the video release of the film. Joe Dante is in for a commentary and there's some deleted sequences to boot. If you're a fan of Gremlins or just a piece of strange cinema, check this out. This is a surefire cult classic. The fact that Christopher Lee turns in a performance as Doctor named Doctor Catheter should say it all. |
