With almost an hour of deleted scenes restored to "Dances with Wolves," one gets a much better understanding of the personal anguish faced by Lieutenant John Dunbar regarding which alliance he must ultimately make, that being, with his own race and heritage or with his new family and friends, the Lakota people of the High Plains. I won't spoil the surprises by writing about them here. I will merely say that watching this classic with all of the restored scenes gives it much greater depth... and if you loved the original theatrical version of "Dances with Wolves," adding the "Dance with Wolves-Extended Cut, Collector's Edition" to your movie library is a must. I was listening to music on youtube while watching this movie on mute. However, the plot and theme was very clear. It was quite exciting to see a civil war soldier (albeit in fiction) riding between the lines and protesting the unnessary slaughter of men in worthless combat. It was also nice to see his humanity in accomodating the Sioux nation and dealing with its mishaps with other indian tribes. It's too bad the others, namely, the warlords, didn't have the same humanitarian spirit and see the beauty in peace and love (not in the shallow hippy sense). Very nice movie. I will watch it again.

DANCES WITH WOLVES...1990

original novel and original screenplay written by michael blake... directed by kevin costner...sweeping musical score by john barry...music that will always haunt me...filmed on location in badlands national park...south dakota....

kevin costner plays lt. john dunbar...a wounded and disillusioned soldier that just misses losing his leg by default during a massive civil war battle...after this brush with death...he feels that his life no longer has meaning and attempts to take it by riding his trusty stead right through the middle of a battle field...battle... with his arms outstretched and his head pointing to the very heavens in a gesture that says...i'm ready lord...take me now...

after this attempt to end his life fails miserably.......he is assigned...by request...to a western outpost called fort hays...from fort hays he puts in yet another request to be transferred to an out post even further into the wilderness ....explaining that he wanted to see the vast frontier "before it's gone"...and thus is assigned to fort sedwick in the badlands of south dakota..

his strange journey begins when robert pastorelli as a slobish yet endearing peasant named timmons who is hired to take him and supplies to this new outpost....

we are treated all along our journey..to sweeping vistas of uninterrupted green lands and fields of wheat as far as the eye can see...these give way to magnificent cliffs and valley's....and eventually pristine rivers lakes and a pond near the fort surrounded by cattails and tall reeds! gorgeous cloudless blue skies are presented to us as a gift...

after arriving at the fort and unloading supplies...pastorelli turns his wagon around and leaves costner alone with his horse cisco..the fort is totally abandon....but costner is determined to stay and make it work..writing in his journal..."there can be no place like this on earth"....he soon enough develops a symbiotic relationship with an inquisitive wolf that he names "two socks" because of the white markings on his front paws...later on we see the soldiers that eventually invade and take over this place...kill two socks for sport....i don't care to relive this scene.....

as i watch this film yet again...it's beauty...cinematography and music still take my breath away...

enter the beautifully costumed sioux...our main characters played by graham green as "kicking bird" and rodney grant as "wind in his hair" and veteran actor floyd red crow westerman as "ten bears"....these warriors visit costners encampment several times at first with great interest in knowing more about this strange white man who lives alone at this fort......one day he decides to confront the indians himself when he becomes sick and tired of being a target and several attempts at trying to steel his horse...on the way he encounters a badly injured and bleeding mary mcdonnell who plays "standing with fist"....and delivers her in his arms...back to her home with the sioux...

after a time of learning about each other and trusting each other..costner and the sioux become friends and uh oh...he and mary become enamored of each other and a story between the two develops.....costner is at home with the sioux and is eventually taken on an unbelievably gorgeously filmed buffalo hunt....later i learned that these bison belonged to a near by farmer who rented them out to tig productions...for the scene.....no buffalo were injured....

later costner and mcdonnell are married in true sioux fashion.....but he decides shortly there after to take his bride and return to civilization to teach the world about the culture of the great american indian....

it is a poignant goodbye for costner and mcdonnell as they bid farewell to their family just as we see a regiment of soldiers approaching to annihilate the tribe from another direction......

there is a epilogue....we learn that "thirteen years later the last of the free sioux submitted to white authority at fort robinson nebraska..the great horse culture of the plains was gone and the american frontier was soon to pass into history"......

and ya know something....as many times i have have seen it since...i still cry just as much as i did the very first time!

robert pastorelli died shorty after by suicide after the death of his real life love drown in a backyard swimming pool....another terrible loss to the world......

Wow, this is a powerful movie. I recently rewatched it after several years and suddenly remembered what really makes a great movie. I love how "Dances with Wolves" begins with an intimate portrait of the American West, from the vast plains to the charismatic wolf "Two-Socks". The film follows Kevin Costner's emotional but nuanced journey from disillusioned Army officer to Sioux patriot. The acting is superb all around. There are no shallow characters, even within the U.S. Army. Every character seems to have several layers of emotional complexity. "Dances with Wolves" is an emotional and visional treat. I can't wait until it comes out on blu-ray.

If you ask me, this movie would have been fine without the gour and violence. I suppose they were trying to portray how things were back then though... But, other than that it was very good, very touching. THE END
