*****vhs is alive and well***** *****brand new***** *****classic***** *****hard to find***** this is one of those classic movies we all love to watch and collect and increase our movie collections, in stock and ready to ship
Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from 1966 is the final movie in The Man With No Name trilogy featuring Clint Eastwood. This spaghetti western filmed in Spain with mostly Italian actors is so spare that it is almost a silent film. In fact, it plays like a Greek tragedy. The 2005 special edition runs three hours. IMDb rates it as 9.0 and #4 of the 250 best movies of all time.
It is easy to spot the flaws in the movie from the very beginning. The scenery and buildings do not look at all like the American West. Most of the actors' voices are dubbed. The highly praised soundtrack by Ennio Morricone is incredibly repetitive.
This film is all skin and bones and no meat. The Greatest Western Of All Time has to be Judge Roy Hill's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid from 1969. It has great acting, humor, an excellent score and beautiful scenery. Hey, it even goes to Bolivia.
The blu-ray version of this classic spaghetti western looks and sounds great for such an old movie. There is an improvement over the regular DVD version, but of course it will pale beside today's modern, eye-popping films. The disc is definitely worth the price paid for anyone that is a fan of this genre.
Finally, a decently produced version of what is arguably the greatest western ever made! I discarded the VHS version of this film when the first DVD appeared, and like other reviewers, was disappointed at the audio and video quality of the early DVD. This latest version more than makes up for previous format inadequacies. The film is crystal clear; the audio does total justice to Ennio Morricone's magnificent soundtrack and the action in the film. If you are a fan of this film, do not hesitate to acquire this wondrous version.
"the greatest movie ever made !"

This is the art of movie making, this is what the cinema was meant for. 100% entertainment! If the highest rating a movie can get is 5 stars, this one deserves 6!! I've seen it about 15 times in different formats including pan&scan vhs, single dvd, laser disc and now this special edition. With the inclusion of newly dubbed 18-minute footage and 5.1 mix, this edition is a must have. Even though there are some negative reviews about new voices of Clint and Eli (sounding very old , even distracting from the movie), I believe it is partly psychological since you know which scenes are newly dubbed. If you are going to watch it first time and don't know which scenes are new, you won't get distracted or maybe will not recognize the difference at all. Some of the sound effects have been altered for the new mix (especially gunshots - a trademark of Leone) which is the only complaint I have. If it was possible to keep them intact in 'For A Few Dollars More' 5.1 mix, it could as well have been done for 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. But anyway it was great to watch the movie this way too. I take it as a different taste rather than comparing it with the 161-minute mono cut. I wish they could also save the 'Socorro' sequence and even more scenes. This film could last 5 hours and I still could watch it with excitement, not getting bored a second.
So; keep your single disc releases but also experience the new 179-minute release with 5.1 mix. (Second disc is loaded with extras worth to see)
