| In the beginning of Country Rock there was just the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and their greatest-ever album, "Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy." Everything after that is commentary. The only weak cuts on this are the extra two added years later when the CD was created. And my only complaint with the band is that these days they only play two songs from this seminal album, whereas I'd like to hear six or seven. Which ones? "Some of Shelly's Blues," "Santa Rosa," "Propinquity," "Randy Lynn Rag," "Clinch Mountain Backstep," "Living Without You," "Yukon Railroad," and oh yes, "Mr. Bojangles" and "House of Pooh Corner." If you download Bojangles, make sure you pick up the intro that precedes it, Bill McEuen's interview with Uncle Charlie. On vinyl they were inseperable, and should be on your mp3, too. Don't take my word for it -- I have it on good authority (John McEuen's) that even Paul McCartney loved this album. [...]. |

| NGDB's magnum opus in my opinion. So much great stuff on one CD. Their new one sounds great too but, for me, this is their high water mark. If you haven't already got it, get it! |

What a great collection and rebirth of memories listening to the classics of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band particular listening again to old Uncle Charlie singing about Jessie James then talking about that old singing hound Teddy who on cue howls in tune to Uncle Charlie's music and then breaks into my all time favorite Nitty Gritty song, "Mr. Bojangles". Not only does that introduction by Uncle Charlie bring back memories of their early 70 albums but that original introduction sets the tone for one of the all time beautiful songs sung by Jeff Hanna. After listening to Uncle Charlie and Teddy, it tugs the heart strings when Hanna sings about how the dog "upped and died" and "after 20 years, he still grieves". The Nitty always could play virtually anything with a wide arrangement of instruments and Hanna's voice is beautiful with an easy range supported by the vocals of Carpenter and Fadden. And how great that McEuen returned to the band that still makes a great nucleus. Not caling the CD it's greatest hits suits it well band 'House on Pooh Corner', "Some of Shelly's Blues', 'Mississippi Rain (bonus track)' etc just sound great in this remastered set. This collection dosen't have some of the modest heavy commercial material produced in the late 70s/80s but iys their very best collection of pure Dirt songs. You are even blessed with another out take of Uncle Charlie. The Nitty Gritty Dirt band has a touch of heart and soul of America with a graceful re/ationship between country and rock that reasonates in a pure sound fittingly from the rockies that can play anywhere in America. Nitty Gritty please come to Tidewater Virginia soon.

Simply put, this recording belongs on that small shelf for
records that you will never part with.....I have often asked
people " Is there anything out there in the same vein ". and
they can not think of one recording. 20 tracks.....If you can't
hear this, then ask someone to put another shovel of dirt on you.

| I bought this album back in 1973 and it has remained a favorite. There isn't a weak spot in this collection. Mr. Bojangles by Jerry Jeff Walker is performed beautifully and touches the emotions. Some of Shelley's Blues and House at Pooh Corner received lots of radio play back in the 70's due to their catchy tunes and great instrumentation. My favorite tune is the gorgeous Randy Newman ballad "Livin' Without You." (I do not understand how this beautiful song never became a hit). The collection offers diverse country/rock selections that have a sound of their own. I have to believe that anyone who purchases this album and gives it a chance will feel the same as I do - - that this is unique, heartfelt, superb and flawless. |
