Here is what people are saying about the Lyle Lovett - The Road to Ensenada
5 Star Rating  "Great songs - mellow rock / rock / lite country"2009-10-02
- Reviewed By User: A12UJ2D0J8DJ7J
Lovett is part philosopher, part poet and part comedian, and he performs each role on The Road to Ensenada. There is a hint (if not more) of Texas in most of what Lyle Lovett does, and this album is no exception. But unlike the folk motif of 1994's I Love Everybody, this CD offers a wider array of genres - relaxed mellow rock ("Her First Mistake") next to swing tunes ("That's Right (You're Not From Texas)"), spacious acoustic ballads like "Who Loves You Better" next to straight-ahead rock songs like "Private Conversation." Lyle Lovett does not need promotion - but too many have pigeon-holed Lovett has a country singer - he is so much more, with a significant portion of his song catalog closer to Jazz/Jazz Vocal than to Country. He is perhaps the best songwriter of his generation. GENRES: Rock, Mellow Rock, Country.

BUY IF YOU LIKE: John Hiatt, Robert Earl Keen.
MUST HEAR TRACKS: "Don't Touch My Hat," "Her First Mistake," "Private Conversation," "It Ought To Be Easier," "The Road To Ensenada."

5 Star Rating  "The Troubadour of Modern Texas"2009-09-24
- Reviewed By User: A18ZOHJ7ZERQ8
At some point in Texas history, the state battle cry changed from "Remember the Alamo" to "Don't Touch My Hat!". Lyle Lovett's witty lyrics immortalize this transformation. This same spirit shows in "That's Right (You're Not From Texas)" when it urges the non-native resident to get longer trousers and cock the Stetson at the correct angle. Lyle Lovett rides that (big white) horse again in "Long Tall Texan" which mocks the state mythology even as it embraces it.

Perhaps I'm only a one-eyed Fiona, but I clearly see what Mr. Lovett is getting at. My First Mistake was putting this CD in the player of my pickup truck while driving on the Road To Ensenada. It Ought To Be Easier to take it out, but I just keep returning to it. It's like Christmas Morning, having a Private Conversation, while making Promises to oneself one knows one can't keep.

The mixture of Texas swing and modern angst makes for one of the most compelling and enjoyable voices in American music. The wit and the intelligence of the lyrics are matched by the wide reach of the musical moods. I've had this CD for ages, but its freshness and fun are undiminished by time.

5 Star Rating  "Pure genius, creative, catchy, a fantastic album"2008-11-20

To say that Lyle Lovett is a musical genius is a bit of an understatement. This stunning album, "The Road to Ensenada," is high art...an addictive, catchy, sensitive, quirky, and complex album that puts 99% of all of today's formulaic country artists to shame. In this album he experiments with jazz, country-rock, sweet ballads, and humor. He employs a large band of outstanding artists to back him up. I was shaking my head in amazement at the background music. As you sit and listen, try to pick out each individual instrument, and appreciate the genius and complexity of the arrangements.
I dare you to listen to "Private Conversation" and try to stand still! You'll be singing it in your head for the next three days. Or just close your eyes and listen to the complex melodies and musicianship in the background of "It Ought to be Easier," then listen to it again for the words. Amazing. A true artist. In my opinion, this is his best ever.

When I lived in Couer d'Alene, my uncle and I would play this album all the time. In fact he had almost all of Lyle's music and I instantly became a fan and once again Amazon came through as I bought two of his CDs for a total of $10 but it's this album with its cool sarcastic wit and little guitar twang that gets me.

I put it on for a pal of mine and she thought I had lost my mind but by the end she was loving it - a duet with Randy Newman on "Long Tall Texan" ("ooh lordy is you the law?") and the hilarious yet serious "Don't Touch My Hat" ("you can have my girl but don't touch my hat); this album proves why he has had a revered career beyond just the average country performer. Plus I just read that Liz Phair includes this as one of her favorite albums.

I am a fan of Lyle Lovett but was not impressed with this album. I have found that some albums do grow on you over time but have not experienced that with this album.
