Sergio's music is very easy listening with a combination of smooth
jazz,basanova and a taste of Latin sounds.I enjoyed his music in
the 60's & 70's and I will forever. There will never be another
Sergio Mendes with his wonderful band of fantastic singers.This is
an excellent CD after all these years. Thanks. A Fan |

| I grew up in the 60's and 70's hearing Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. When I caught a video of their appearance on some tv show way back then, I realized that I really like their sound - very cool, smooth samba and bossa nova! The sound on the CD is great. Some of the songs are dated, but if you grew up in those decades you might like this blast from the past. |

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Greatest Hits has excellent music for so many people to enjoy. Sergio Mendes assembled a wonderful group of artists to make this music; and I enjoy their music immensely. We get catchy renditions of famous tunes on this album and everything is performed with sensitivity and grace. In addition, the quality of the sound on this CD is excellent. I really like the artwork which incorporates the art from the record album jacket when this was originally released.
"Mais Que Nada" begins the album with a very bossa nova sounding number that shines bright. The percussion and keyboard work especially well to make this hold its own very well. I always considered bossa nova to be elegant and numbers like this prove bossa nova can also fall into the easy listening category. Don't worry if you don't understand everything that is sung--the music flows so sweetly that you'll be enchanted anyway! "Scarborough Fair" has a lush musical arrangement and again the percussion is used very well. They play and sing this very well; but an even better number would be their excellent cover of The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends." "With A Little Help From My Friends" has these champs performing at their best and that's grand. They have an excellent sense of timing and they handle the complex tempo changes seemingly effortlessly. Of course, we know it really wasn't all that easy; their talents carried them through.
"The Look Of Love" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David gets another fine treatment here from Mendes and his peers; the brass works wonders for this number while the singers harmonize faultlessly. "The Look Of Love" sounds great in their capable hands. "Night And Day" by Cole Porter also shines bright on this album; this bossa nova, jazzy rendition with just a small side dish of pop flavoring all comes together for a great effect and I'm impressed. Listen also for a masterful cover of another Beatles tune, "The Fool On The Hill." "The Fool On The Hill" lacks nothing--it's all THAT good.
"Going Out Of My Head" sports a sophisticated arrangement and I love that piano playing. They perform "Going Out Of My Head" with panache; it's a wonderful highlight of this album. "So Many Stars" is very pretty; and there's another gem in "Day Tripper." "Day Tripper" has more great piano work and the drums don't sound too shabby, either! The Beatles would be proud. The album ends strong with Sergio Mendes & Brasil performing "Mundo Hermoso (Pretty World)." This is bliss!
Overall, I have no qualms about telling you that this is very fine, high quality control music. Unfortunately, the CD runs slightly too short; at roughly 39 minutes they could have included an outtake, an alternate take or even a couple of bonus tracks to round this album out and make it an even better value. However, what we do get is terrific and so this is a relatively minor disappointment. This is a must-have CD for Sergio Mendes fans and fans of Sergio Mendes & Brasil will want this, too. It's also an excellent starter CD for people just discovering the artistry of Sergio Mendes & Brasil.
