"The reason that I know the Father " | 2009-01-26 |

I attended a youth conference in Indianapolis IN my Sophomore year of high school and at that conference "Deeper" was played at each morning session and evening session. I enjoyed the song, and knowing nothing about Delirious I decided to purchase the album on a whim (for a sickly ridiculous price of like $18.00 if memory serves). I'd been a 'good kid' and nominal believer for many years, but somehow the goodness of God had never really reached my heart. I was skeptical at best when it came to God being more than a removed super being who may or may not care about me personally.
The church I attended at that time was pretty dry spiritually. There was little attention paid to the Holy Spirit. I didn't really know much about the Father, didn't know about His intimacy or love for me. I was afraid of 'spiritualism' and would never have chosen open to open myself to the Holy Spirit in a meaningful way. Listening to this album was life changing. Songs like "King of Fools," "Sanctify," "King or Cripple" and "History Maker," began to break through the emptiness that I felt and I started to see the Father in new and powerful ways.
The hunger that I felt for more of His goodness took me down vastly different paths than I would have otherwise taken and opened my heart to receiving more of the Father's love. I realized that I didn't really know Him. "Keep me. Won't you keep me. Keep me. Won't you keep me," became a prayer that led me into a new and real relationship with Christ Jesus and profoundly changed my life. Listening to this album now, so many years later, I realize that I am a different person because of the influence this music had on me. I would not have recognized it at the time, but this album also created the foundation for my relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Is it true today that when people pray We'll see dead men rise And the blind set free Yes it's true and I believe it I'm living for you
A lifestyle of the miraculous was completely new ground to me. I felt my heart awaken to new possibilities, to the impossible hope that the Father was so much more than I had believed and everything I had been afraid to hope for. Through listening to this music the seeds were planted for me to experience the Father's love, and to begin to contend for His Kingdom. This is less a review than a testimony, but I can't separate the two.
Well it's true today that when people stand With the fire of God, and the truth in hand We'll see miracles, we'll see angels sing We'll see broken hearts making history Yes it's true and I believe it We're living for you
I believe it. |

To say this is a good album would be doing it an injustice. Delirious? have historically been a very consistent band and this album is no exception. The disc is filled with songs that explore the some of the questions & challenges we all face at some point (Deeper, Promise, King or Cripple), deep, passionate worship songs (What a Friend, All The Way, August 30th, King of Fools, Hands of Kindness, Sanctify), and some upbeat worship tracks (Revival Town, Louder than the Radio [not on UK version, remixed from Cutting Edge for the US vesion]). Worthy of mention are:
White Ribbon Day: a U2-esque call for peace. Fits very well with the events of Sept 11, 2001, and the recent war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The electric guitars, while simple, are very, very effective.
History Maker: No doubt one of Delirious?' best-known songs & needs no introduction at concerts. History Maker is a 6-minute rock anthem, with lyrics on the power of prayer ("Is it true today/That when people pray/We'll see dead men rise/And the blind set free") and being a 'History Maker', calling people to make a stand for the gospel. It was, in 2005, voted as Delirious?' Ultimate Song by fans on the website Delirious.org.uk
All in all, King of Fools is a very well-rounded album that does not fail to disappoint. This was the first CCM album I ever bought after becoming a Christian, and it remains in my daily listening even now, almost 10 years later. |

| Delirious? is not a run-of-the-mill contemporary Christian band; they are more like a 90s alternative band -- when rock was at its best, in my opinion. The sounds are more slow and easy and low-key than a slam-in-your-face rock, though the songs definitely move with a rock beat. You can savor every word this way and really connect with the Lord in a meaningful way. I'm listening to the CD as I write this and my favorite songs are "Revival Town" and "History Maker" among others. Nothing they have done since this album even comes close to the powerful messages found here; in comparison, its latest CD "Now Is the Time" is like a plane that keeps taxiing on the runway and never lifts off. "King of Fools" is airborne! |

| I actually heard this CD from a friend, and I loved the mellow melodies of its music. Very nice buy, and yes, they do sound a lot like U2, just on the calmer side. |

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Christian rock. In fact, my very first introduction to the genre was a 2 disk set from Delirious. Since then, however, I've also been introduced to Audio Adrenaline, Third Day and DC Talk - among others. While this particular CD is masterfully mixed and the guys are all masters of their instruments, it just lacks the driving force behind the message I've come to appreciate from others. (I often tease my wife - who tends towards the more mellow in music - that she needs to start a support group called, "Headbangers for Christ.")
This is a decent album, (dating myself there), and the rhythmic backdrop of "August 30th" - while initially annoying to me - became strangely soothing and reassuring by the end. There is plenty of good to be said about this disc, but if you tend towards Third Day and AA, this one probably isn't for you. |
