Here is what people are saying about the Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
5 Star Rating  "Creates a Unique, Inimitable Mood"2009-11-05

Van Morisson's "Astral Weeks" is a phenomenon. Recorded as if on a whim, within a few days with a bunch of musicians possessing (as it turned out) uncanny gifts of improvisation and collective spirit, it treads the line between rock, country and blues, even jazz. Song structures remind you of lyrical poems, rhythms and instruments are many times utilized in the best fashion imaginable. Better still, lyrics have something to say. It may take a while to get accustomed to the Irishman's elastic, sometimes growling singing, but in the end you may well realize that it just belongs with this music. Simply put, pop and rock music would be considerably poorer without this gem. Eclectic and beyond category, this is more than essential. For me right up there with the Beatles' "Revolver" and Joni Mitchell's "Blue".

The basic tunes are very good but his taste in orchestral embellishment and counterpoint is superb.

After all these years (five of 'em!), "Sweet Thing" still has the power to freeze my blood. A stuttering shock of memory, a galloping fever dream that strikes every nerve, "Sweet Thing" is impressionistic avant-folk that plays like pure, sunstruck pop. The song seems to come from nowhere; there's silence, and then there's a guitar riff fading in, a skipping, bounding, tumbling cascade of strings, with chords that seem to jump from the listener's subconscious to the edge of her periphery. For five exhilarating seconds, that guitar leaps and flutters, sticks like a lump in the throat, burrows into the emotions, summons up memories, and shivers its way down the spine. And then, like the best Phil Spector productions, like the sudden resurfacing of a precious childhood memory, everything seems to happen at once; a torrent of bells, strings, drums, and bass froths up and into motion, and the whole song becomes a churning whirling rushing thing, innocent and beautiful and violent and always leaping at empty space, seemingly trying to run ahead of itself. And then the voice, ravaged but sublime, the earthy perfection of childhood spiked with the bitterness of age, the distance of memory. The lyrics, they come out of the center of everything. Impatient and struck with sudden inspiration, they pour forth as a tide of images and emotions, starting in medias res and then working their way outward in a loping spiral:

And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And theyll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrows sky
And I will never grow so old again
And I will walk and talk
In gardens all wet with rain

This is life in the abstract, this is the sunburst of childhood, the joyous ache of memory, the slow tug of age, the endless worlds of freedom and loss that exist within the mind. This, for the four-and-a-half minutes that it takes up, is the only thing in the world that can possibly matter. "Sweet Thing" is explosively and inescapably gorgeous, not to mention virtually perfect in every way.

Plus seven more!

4 Star Rating  "Good, But Not The Masterpiece Everyone Says It Is"2009-05-25

I had read so many positive reviews of this album that I was sure it had to be a masterpiece. I had heard Sweet Thing several times on a compilation album, and was excited to give the album a listen. Sweet Thing, along with the title track and The Way Young Lovers Do (which sounded like nothing else on the album) were great. I can't say the same for the remaining five tracks. These songs were very simple, mostly basic three cord progressions, that lacked any structure (or brevity). The scat singing and loose arrangements are not bad, but tiresome after four minutes. Pretty good, but far from a masterpiece.

I think it was 1969, a friend and I took the train into NYC to comb the record shops. In one small shop somewhere near Grand Central Station I'm flipping through vinyl with this playing in the store, and more and more I can't do anything but listen. Madame George did it. So I say to my friend, "listen to this, this is pretty cool," but he's taciturn, non-committal. I was riveted. So I left with Astral Weeks and Country Joe's Thinking of Woody Guthrie. Astral Weeks is one album that simply entered my aural mind and took up residence. I can hear it anytime, anywhere, no ear buds necessary. In my own Van Morrison list of indispensables this is the cornerstone, along with Veedon Fleece, A Sense of Wonder and St. Dominic's Preview.

I'm about to celebrate my 60th birthday, and every year has been filled with music. From Peggy Lee to The Everly Brothers to Buddy Holly to Tom and Jerry to...Kings of Leon. Sixty years of heavenly sounds and feelings.

But I never really liked Van Morrison. Thought his stuff was weird, a bit too self-conscious, sometimes annoyingly so. Joni MItchell has always been my number one, followed by Dylan, Neil Young, Springsteen, etc., etc...

Then I read an article in Rolling Stone about Morrison's Astral Weeks concert in LA. I became curious. Oddly enough, the CD was in my huge collection, although I couldn't remember ever listening to it. I put on my earbuds and let the music flow and wail through me. I cried, and I couldn't even follow all the words.

Now I have the lyrics. The Joycean lyrics. The "whatever they mean, they mean so, so much" lyrics. And I've been appreciating some of Morrison's other work.

I don't know what it is about Astral Weeks. Maybe it's the fact that the entire album was recorded in a matter of hours with musicians he didn't even know, creating a stream-of-consciousness quality in every note from every instrument. Or perhaps it's the fact that it was recorded at night, at an hour when every musician on the album, from Connie Kay on drums to John Payne on flute and soprano sax, was just tired out enough to be totally present and alive.

Whatever it is, Astral Weeks has touched me like no other piece of music ever has. And every time I listen, it makes me cry. Not from sadness, but from the very core of my soul.
