Here is what people are saying about the Timex Expedition Combo Watch
"Disappointing" | 2008-07-28 |

| This watch looks good and was delivered promptly. Unfortunately it didn't keep time. It would be fine for a day or so, then promptly lose a couple of hours. I returned it to the supplier (Chelsea Watch) and asked for a replacement. After about a week they issued credit to my Visa rather than sending a new watch. This is the first problem I have had with a Timex product, so I believe it to be an isolated incident. Overall it was a disappointing experience however. |

| This is my first expedition watch And I'm really happy with it. Nothing flashy, but does what it's supposed to do. Since the digital display is pretty small I suspect the other features like stopwatch etc. would be difficult to work with. Thats the only real complaint about this watch. |

| Bought this watch several months ago...looks very nice...but, it's very difficult to adjust time, alarm, ect., overly complicated. Also the LED is almost impossible to read, it's just too small. Don't think I'd buy this watch again. |

I get another one of these every couple of years. Maybe it's just me, but mine don't last that long. I don't treat them roughly at all, don't get them wet (unless caught in the rain), and they still die on me. Gone are the days of "Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking."
What keeps me coming back? I love the analog hands plus digital features -- especially the countdown timer. Having a watch with a timer has made a huge difference in my life. Need to be back from lunch in an hour for a meeting? Set the timer for 45 minutes. Need to take antibiotics 8 hours apart? Set the timer for 8 hours. Want a simulated snooze alarm? Set the alarm, and then set the timer to go off 10 minutes later. The timer alone makes this watch one of my most favored gadgets.
And, even though they've gotten more expensive, the price is still decent. It's very hard to find an affordable combo watch with all these features, so I keep buying a new one whenever the old one gets out of whack.
The most recent one started keeping erratic time after a couple of years. I replaced the battery (got somebody at the dept. store jewelry counter to do it for me to make sure it was done right), and it still had the same problem. Before that, my previous couple of Expeditions kept accurate time but went silent after I replaced the battery. And since the watch doesn't vibrate, a silent alarm or timer doesn't do you much good.
After one of these "new battery = no sound" episodes, I discovered there's a little metal contact inside that enables the sound. It can get bent down when the battery is being replaced. If you take off the back and carefully bend up the contact slightly so it's again touching the metal back of the watch when you close it, the watch will make sound again, for a while.
Despite this recurring annoyance, I've finally concluded that these are affordable enough, and useful enough, that I can amortize the cost over a couple of years. I just got a new one. See you again in a couple of years. |

I used to get another one of these every couple of years. I didn't treat them roughly at all, but they'd still die on me. Gone are the days of "Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking." The watches would typically die when it was time to replace the battery. Either they would quit making sound, start keeping erratic time, or freeze up.
My most recent Timex Expedition watch death--after owning it for less than a year--happened when I pressed the Indiglo night-light button. Not only did it not light up, but every function except the analog hands no longer works, and the digital time display is frozen at 7:32.15 p.m. (What the heck, it's still right once a day!) So now it's no better than hundreds of other battery-operated watches with hands but no special functions.
After owning six or seven of these watches over the past 30 years, I've decided that was my last Timex purchase.
After scouting around for another watch with analog hands, countdown timer, and alarm, I settled on the Casio Men's World Time Databank Watch #AW80-7AV for $20.19 plus shipping. So far it seems like a decent watch, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it more when I replace the cheap plastic band with a cloth/velcro one from Bison Designs. |
