Here is what people are saying about the Chris Whitley - Living With the Law
"One of my fave albums of the 90s" | 2009-07-02 |

| Thank god I had the chance to see Chris Whitley perform live all the way back in '93. I could tell then that there was something magical about him and, listening to this album over 15 years later, that magic remains. I kept the guitar pick I snagged off the stage and put it in the liner notes of my worn-out CD of 'Living With the Law.' Each and every song on this album remains a rich blues tone poem, with complex lyrics sliding over the melancholy sound of Chris's National in a way I found fresh and gripping. This is definitely an album to spend some quality time with. |

"The Late, Great Bluesman's Debut" | 2009-06-04 |

| Chris Whitley started out playing on the streets of NYC & then took off for Belgium where he had some minor success. Upon returning to the States, he scored a record deal with Columbia & issued "Living w/ the Law." It was produced by Malcolm Burn & was an instant success. Rolling Stone gave it fantastic reviews & Tom Petty gave Whitley the opening slot on his tour. Whitley's debut was a bit of a throw-back cd. It was sparse. Honest. Real. Raw. And damn good. Playing a pedal-steel National guitar, Whitley's songwriting echoed a long-gone American landscape and is refreshing roots-rock at it's best. Highlights include "Big Sky Country" and "Kick the Stones," but this is truly an album. And should be listened to in one sitting. Straight thru, from the beginning track to the end. Chris Whitley died much too young but he left a ton of great music. And it all started with this disc right here. |

"Haunting, throaty, Spanish-moss music" | 2009-05-14 |

| Effortful, heart-felt swamp-delta music from the edge of life. Haunting, throaty, Spanish-moss music. Rich, intricate steel-string guitar in simple, well-crafted settings. When I first heard him, I had never heard anything quite like this music. Steve Earle is harder, but no more determined. As I replace a beat-up cassette with a shiny CD, I am reminded how much I wanted more of his music. But I cannot replace him; he will be missed. Standouts: Living with the law, Big sky country, Long way around. [46:59] |

I was recently introduced to Chris Whitley music and loved it. What a shame that he died so young. What a loss to the music world.

| I only have this on cassette. There's a hint it was recorded awhile back. But my car has a cassette player and this has been on it the past two days. (Inherited it from my late twin brother; the last time I heard it was in his car. Thanks, man.) It's a good cassette player, which is how you know that (1) this guy should have played a lot more acoustic on this record and (2) but then what would he do with his great backup band? The lyrics are the kind that make you glad they're included with the tape. I haven't heard it yet on a full-scale sound system at high volume. The cops might show up when I do. It's incendiary blues and high-octane rock. And it still sounds great. |

To show you how good this album is: I bought this album sometime in the 90s, enjoyed it very much, then lost it in a series of moves. A decade later I found it again, and popped it in--it was as thrilling now as it was then. I dare anyone to listen to this album in after work traffic and still be in a bad mood. |
