Hawks & Doves being Young's 1980 release and is a straight forward country and western album that was met with mixed reviews. I agree with Allmusic which gave this album 3/5. The songs are by no means bad but it is does not a track that is memorable. The booklet is confusing as the lyrics are hard to read and I am not sure what the cover of the star is supposed to represent. 3/5.

Another excellent album by my favorite singer/songwriter Neil Young. This group of songs have a country sound and are well writen and recorded. I am very plesased to add this album to my collection, and recommend it to everyone.

I think "Hawks & Doves" has been one of Neil's most under-rated releases. He does a lot of great story telling in this bunch of tunes like on Captain Kennedy, The Old Homestead and the funny Lost In Space. It also pays hommage to the hard working American Laborer with Union Man,Comin'apart At Every Nail and Hawks & Doves.

Hawks and Doves released in 1980 is a good solid album from Neil Young,Young alway's versatile and even if this was a thrown together recording as in Stars-n-Bars both of these compilation's work and both will be considered classic's somewhere down the road.They don't make album's like this nowadays,and every track on Hawks and Doves rolls with the flow.The Old Homestead,a weird folk ballad on this cd,is hard to understand and as you listen to this song,you tell yourself what in the blue blazes is Young talking about,which leaves you with a mysterious kind of feeling,and listen to Captain Kennedy another folk ballad talking about a soldier doing his utmost duty,there's not a bad track on this cd,it's a real short recording as it is also entertaining.The whole compilation is very similar to Stars-n-Bars and would've worked well as a double album.Just another notch on the guitar for Neil Young.

At less than thirty minutes, Hawks and Doves is more of a glorified EP than an actual album. Released in 1980, it was the beginning of a creative dryspell for the otherwise brilliant Neil Young that lasted nearly ten years. As with Bob Dylan, the 1980s were trying times for Neil Young. It wouldn't be until 1989 that both men made their comebacks.

The few highlights are from the acoustic half. 'Little Wing,' 'The Old Homestead,' and 'Captain Kennedy' keep Hawks and Doves soaring...just barely. The "album" is not a total disappointment. Hawks and Doves is worth buying if you can find it cheap, but no Neil Young enthusiast should start their collection here. **1/2

This is where Neil's slide into obscurity began: it took him until 1989 to return to form and put out a hit album (Freedom, to be precise). This was a particular flop, his first since the debut: it wasn't put out on CD until 1998, and even today it's widely regarded as one of Neil's absolute worst. But if ya give it a try, you might find there are one or two songs worth salvaging on this album, including the famously cryptic "Old Homestead". I'm not trying to argue that this is an On the Beach-type find, but it's better than you've heard, at least. I also like the freaked-out folk song "Lost in Space", with a surprising tempo shift and a bunch of other weird gimmicks. The quiet "Little Wing" is reverent and gorgeous and has nothing to do with Jimi Hendrix; "Captain Kennedy" is an interesting solo acoustic performance with cool sarcastic antiwar lyrics - its melody is reminiscent of Fairport Convention, but the lyrics are much more modern. Sadly, all this is offset by five laughable country-rock songs: "Stayin' Power" and "Coastline" are so similar you could be fooled into thinking they were in fact the same song accidentally pressed onto the album twice; the stomp of "Union Man" and "Hawks & Doves" is embarrassing and clumsy, and "Comin' Apart at Every Nail" is pathetic and clichéd. So basically, the acoustic folk songs rule, and the country-rockers are pathetic humiliations. So this is a tough call.
