The "Born" CDs were what made the Boss' legend. Those were the ones you'd hear on the radio no end back in the day. I admit, I prefer "Born to Run" over "Born in the USA".
This is a great early day Bruce CD and I think still a must for any Boss fan. My favorites:

I am working my way through Springsteen's catalogue and reviewing as I go. After listening to The River and Nebraska I searched for Born in the USA in my cd collection. It wasn't there! Perhaps this is a clue? Anyway I dug out the vinyl and am listening to it as I type. As I review the music and not the sound quality the source is irrelevant.
First, an admission - when this was released in the summer of 1984 I had been a fan for over ten years already AND I hadn't been thrilled with the commercial quality of some of the songs on 1980's The River. The album's title worried me a little (I know, I know already - it isn't a patriotic rant. However, until you listened to the lyrics you didn't know this). Therefore, for several reasons, I approached this new release with trepidation. Was I correct to do so? Well, I have to admit that upon its release I wasn't really partial to this record! It just didn't grab me like The Wild, the first Born, Stranger and Nebraska had when I first listened to them. I expected more. As of today there are 134 four and five star reviews and only 15 negative ones for this record. Should I doubt myself? Was my first assessment misguided? I know that I may be pissing into the wind but after listening to this Born a couple of times today I have no reason to reconsider my initial response. It isn't a bad record by any standard. It just isn't up to the standard that Springsteen set for himself with his earlier releases. Perhaps it is because the subject matter and the music are all so familiar. With Nebraska he had staked out new ground. I guess I was expecting a new direction; a continuation of his artistic development. To my mind Springsteen had already covered the ground that he explores on this record in a more interesting manner. I would like to be more positive but I cannot. Until today I hadn't listened to Born in the USA for twenty years. I may never pull it out again. If I want to hear Bruce I'll spin his earlier music and a couple of later cds.

| Born In the Usa was my introduction to Bruce Springsteen. I wasn't old enough to see the tour, but I talked about him so much, adult friends who DID go brought me souveniers:) I played the weekly top forty every Saturday to hear him during chores, and when I finally got the cassette, I played THAT non stop. It was such a fabulous experience, when my adult friends told me that Springsteen had a long history of great music, I was hard pressed to believe them? BETTER than Born in the USA? I still love this album, although my favourite remains his Live 75 thru 85 set, I got that for Christmas the year it came out and it just cemented my love affair with Bruce Springsteen's music. Born In the USA will always be bright with the amazement of discovering this incredible songwriter and his equally incredible band. |

...and one of the Top 10 of all time, surely.
Few albums come close to the thematic consistency and synergy of this towering masterpiece. The songs, many of them all-time superhits even standing alone, support and reinforce each other in forming a vivid, passionate, proud, humorous, and defiant drama of American working-class life in the late 20th century.
This is what an album should be--not a load of unrelated songs packaged together but a higher-level structure that shines with it's own carefully-crafted artistic identity.
Note that most of these a**-kicking songs ride on a smokin' 80's New Wave beat, and therefore this stands in the ranks of the finest 80's dance albums as well.
A great achievement! |

Okay, he may be the Boss, but I was never a huge fan, but a few weeks ago my pal Jen and I went to my other pal Tommy's house and we listened to song after song from the 70s to the 80s playing a game where Tommy would play the top singles of the year and Jen and I would try to guess what they were. Needless to say we were excellent at said game but what I noticed as we hit the 84/85 years was how much I really liked all the singles from this album.
I knew I loved "I'm On Fire" which always had some sort of exciting sexiness to it, which actually would then conjure up this album cover (helloooo!), but then singles like "Dancing In The Dark," "Cover Me," "Glory Days", "I'm Going Down" endless good old fashioned rock & roll. Sure, his every working man schtick would probably get boring if I were to have a Springsteen marathon but 12 fairly fun songs keeps me feeling slightly patriotic, if only to stand up and salute that album cover.

What can possibly be said about "Born in the U.S.A." that hasn't been said countless times? It's a legendary album, and it deserves every bit of praise. Despite the synths, the catchy hooks, the songs that still have regular radio airplay, and the hype in general, this is not a pop album, and these aren't pop songs; it just SOUNDS that way.
There's not a single weak track here, every song is brilliant in it's own way. There's an abundance of catchy, memorable melodies and refrains, but don't be fooled; these songs really say something. There's an actual meaning to these songs, you just have to, you know, actually listen to the lyrics to find that out (the title track, as has been pointed out countless times, is a prime example of this). "Dancing in the Dark" isn't really a dance tune, it's an angst filled story in which the singer isn't just looking for love, he's looking for the possiblility of love (after all, you can't start a fire without a spark). Who hasn't wanted to change their clothes, hair, or face at what point or another? "I'm on Fire" is a short and beautifully haunting song about the pining of one man for one particular woman (and it has to be noted, this song received one of the greatest music videos of all time, whether it's recognized as such or not. A true work of art). And "Working on the Highway", it's not about road construction, it's about a guy running off with a MUCH younger girl (a fact made even more abundantly clear in the working version of the song titled "Child Bride", which, like the this album's title track, was recorded during the "Nebraska" sessions, but obviously never released on that album)!
The fact that Bruce can make a record sound so commercal, yet mean so much, is just furthur proof of why he's "The Boss" of rock. And you know what's even more amazing? This isn't even his best album! Arguements can be made for "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "Nebraska", but as far as I'm concerned, "Born to Run" is not only Bruce's best, but the best album ever made period. But really, Springsteen's first 8 albums (his entire 70's and 80's output, of which this is the 7th) is incredible; each record a separate masterpiece, brilliant in it's own way.
Still, there can be no doubt that "Born in the U.S.A." is one of the greatest albums of all time. In an era of throwaway music laced with empty lyrics and/or sexual innuendo but no real heart (and yes, that's a trend that continues even more shamelessly today), Springsteen released a record that most certainly had heart and soul. It's importance and impact have not diminished these 20+ years, nor will it diminish. This is rock and roll magic, pure and simple. |

| I purchased this cd JUST to get a copy of "Im On Fire" and sadly, it's the shortest song on the disc and the volume is 'low' in comparison to the other cuts! If you're a FAN of Mr. Bruce, you'll enjoy it all the same. :) |

| This is clearly one of the top rock albums of all-time. The one that put Springsteen's orbit into the top echelon of rock superstar. For years this 1984 release played out on the radio with BORN IN THE U.S.A.(Reagan's choice for a campaign song which was wisley declined, Reagan must not have really listened to the lyrics), GLORY DAYS, DANCING IN THE DARK, MY HOMETOWN and it just goes on. I saw the Boss in concert that year in Philly. The man played for almost 4 hours, giving all he had in one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen. The Boss was definately Born to Play Rock and Roll. |
