I love classical music. I've learned to listen without being hyper-critical; just lsitening with my heart. Barenboim is a gifted muscian, and this performance is yet another example of Daniel's control of the keyboard. Endless hours of great musical listening.

4 Star Rating  "A very good value"2007-10-21

I too am a huge Mozart fan. Since I discovered Mozart, his is about 40% of all the music I listen to these days. I'm just learning to play piano, and Mozart's piano concerti and sonatas are 95% of the inspiration.

There are a few things that should be understood before one purchases this set:

1) This is not what I would call mature Barenboim recordings. He was a young man when these recordings were made, probably in his 20s or 30s. The mature Barenboim is a better pianist than the immature one.

2) This is a "value set", not what most people would regard as the best recordings of the pieces.

At the time I purchased this, this set was 1/3 of the price compared to the set I really wanted. (the Philips set) It is probably still like this. The Philips set is performed by Alfred Brendel, who I think is the better Mozart player. I also own "The Great Piano Concertos Vols. 1 & 2" from the Philips label, and loved every single one of these. This is what led me to buy this set; I wanted to fill in the piano concerto collection and make my own decision as to which ones are The Great Ones.

There is one part of one concerto in particular, I believe it is #9 or #23, third movement, where Barenboim rushes though a part and just plays it so quickly that one cannot distinguish all the notes. It pretty much ruins that whole concerto. However, since I already own other, better recordings of that one, it is no big loss.

Before buying this set, I had never before heard #5, which is one of my favorites. Although it isn't considered one of Mozart's mature piano concerti, it is just brilliant. Mozart himself said this was his favorite.

It was also interesting to hear the early concerti, which are not often recorded, as they are not considered by most to be among his masterpieces. However, I still consider them to be brilliant, and better than many composers could must at their finest. Also, when one considers how old Mozart was when he wrote these, probably around 9? it is just shocking how much talent the man had.

The RCA recordings by Alicia de Larrocha (sp?) are as good as Brendel's from Philips, but she hasn't recorded all of them, only about 5. I haven't heard the Deutsch Gramofon (sp?) recordings of the Mozart piano concerti, but I'm sure they're good as well. (my favorite Mozart recordings tend to alternate between Philips and Deutsche Gramofon)

Yesterday, for my birthday, I just received the Brilliant Classics 170 CD Mozart box set. It will be interesting to hear these concerti in a new recording, on period instruments.

If you like these concerti and are looking for other brilliant Mozart piano works, look for the complete solo piano sonatas by Walter Klein (about 4 CDs) the sonatas for piano & violin, (I have the London set; very good) concertoes for 2 & 3 pianos, (RCA recording with Murray Perhahia and Radu Lupu) and piano for four hands. (played by Christoph Eschenbach, etc.) These are all brilliant works and are not to be missed.

So to sum it up, my favorite overall recordings of the Mozart piano concerti are from Philips, though the set will cost you 3X as much. This set is 90% as good, and a much better value. (this set doesn't include jewel cases; just paper sleeves in an overall cardboard box, with a nice booklet) My opinion is that this is a good set to buy just to hear them all. Then, seek out your favorite recordings of your favorite concerti elsewhere. Everyone has their favorites and it is a personal opinion after all. The recordings are not bad by any means. They're VERY good. Just not the best.

5 Star Rating  "Five stars from a Mozart piano sonata lover"2007-08-14
- Reviewed By mbmd@mindspring.com
As an amateur pianist and Mozart lover, I own the complete piano sonatas by three different artists: Uchida, Maria Joao Pires, and Barenboim. I have listened to each set hundreds of times, and after buying Barenboim, side by side. For me, this interpretation is so far above the others (though much more so compared to Uchida than to Joao Pires), that I have only listened to Barenboim for the past year. One reviewer below points out that the 3 CDs of piano variations are not necessary, and I agree. However, the price is very reasonable, and I simply omitted the last 3 CDs when I loaded this into my iPOD.
You will treasure this performance each time you listen.

5 Star Rating  "like sparkling mineral water"2006-12-22
- Reviewed By davidabaer
It is something near to a cleansing experience to listen through the Mozart piano repertoire as performed by Daniel Barenboim.

For starters, Mozart achieves his sparest, cleanest, most limpid lines when writing for solo piano. Then comes Daniel Barenboim, whose reading of Mozart is crisply and unemotionally classical. Not for him the drawn-out keyboard soliloquy. On the contrary, Barenboim gives us Mozart, only Mozart, and nothing but Mozart, clean and shimmering as sparkling mineral water.

This is not to say that Barenboim as pianist is unfeeling. On the contrary, the Fantasia in C Minor - to choose just one example with almost random lack of care - is quite moving. But not with a flourish. Rather, with almost sinewy restraint. The presentation represents a fine grasp of the master composer, nurtured with discipline across the length and breadth of the voluminous sonatas.

Indeed, the sheer volume of the Mozart piano sonatas is intimidating. It is astonishing to imagine one man having mastered it as Barenboim has. EMI Classics has done us the favor of collecting these two gentlemen's asynchronic collaboration in one set, affordable at that.

If Mozart is a musician for the ages and Barenboim a performer who left a formidable imprint on the twentieth century, their collaboration as represented in these recordings is a watershed that will need to be referenced by students of classical piano for at least another hundred years, or until people can only remember as far back as the Dixie Chicks.

Buy Barenboim on Mozart before that happens, and so stick your thumb in the dike against the evil day.
