"Fantastic fiery fantasy" | 2009-01-24 |

| These short stories are not for the faint of heart...They are hot, steamy and very nice indeed. The story by Angela Knight fills in the story of a "minor" character from her full-length novels that we've been dying to learn. If you haven't read her Mageverse series yet, get out there and find them, because they're all good. Emma Holly is equally talented, and I also enjoyed the other works in this book, although I'm not quite as much a fan of Feehan or Shayne...I like a bit more humor to lighten up my stories. If you enjoy fantasy with a dark and explicit edge, you'll enjoy this collection. |

| I love reading Christine Freehan's books. They are excellent and capture the imagination. Every time I read one I see the movie in my mind. She spins a wonderful story very detailed. |

**** "Dark Hunger" by Christine Feehan.
Carpathians meet Jaguars. I'd have liked to see more info about how and why the two races can or cannot mesh, but I realize there wasn't space in a novella. Both the hero and heroine have siblings who'll probably get more stories.
**** "Awaiting Moonrise" by Maggie Shayne.
Werewolf, voodoo, a cryptozoologist. I kept thinking this was by Rebecca York--it felt very much like her Moon stories.
It was a nice story, but one that would have been better if it had been longer--I didn't really buy that the hero and heroine fell in love so fast.
**** "The Night Owl" by Emma Holly.
Again, just too short. I'd been looking forward to Bastien's story, and I wanted to see more of it. Still, it was a nice portrayal of a natural ruler who's wary of taking power.
****½ "Seduction's Gift" by Angela Knight.
Lancelot! Woo-hoo. The heroine's a cop, knows all about the magi and majae (sp?--I always get them confused--would have been nicer if AK had given them more distinctive designations from the beginning, but...), and in fact already knows Lancelot and that sex with him will bring her into her powers, so it makes the story fit better into the novella length. |

I bought this book because I wanted to read all the stories ever written in Angela Knight's Mageverse collection and I certainly was not disappointed. I just wish she would hurry and write some more Mageverse novels because I've read all the ones so far.
I had never read any novels by Maggie Shayne or Emma Holly. I found both of their offerings very entertaining and will definitely be looking for more of their books.
But the story that finally forced me to write my first review was Christine Feehan's Dark Hunger. I read her Drake Sister stories, loved them and am eagerly awaiting the seventh book in the series. So I was surprised when many of the reviewers had negative comments about a Christine Feehan story. I had never read any books in the Carpathian series. But I TOTALLY loved Dark Hunger. I enjoyed it so much that I quickly bought and read two more Carpathian novels. Another one is on order and the rest are on my shopping list. I'm just sad there are only 24 hours in the day because I can't wait to read them all! |
