| I was interested in this CD and picked it up at an FYE store. I really like some of the tracks such as Let's get this party started, Falling away from me, and so on. I'm a big fan of Korn, I may not have posters or anything, but I love their music. |

I really fell in love with korns music in early 1998, about 6 months before follow the leader came out. I remember being so pumped about the release of this cd, I even sent in a cover for their cover contest for the cd. First off you have to remember korn jumped to mainstream success only about 15-16 months before this album came out and a lot change in their lives. Especially for Jon Davis, by the time they started writing this record he was kicking drugs and alcohol cold turkey and was battling depression, suicidal thoughts and semi-schizopherenia(sp?. So his life leading up to it is what sets the tone for the album. The album is dark, dark, dark. A lot of people complain about the short songs on here, but those songs provide a flow to the whole record. It is almost a concept record. I would recommend this album for anyone that wants to hear korn at their best. |

"It may have a few issues but it's still a very strong addition to the KoRn discography..." | 2008-02-21 |
| - Reviewed By User: ANCOMAI0I7LVG |
I don't know if I'll ever understand why this album got so much flak by KoRn fans when it was first released. It is a very well constructed album that, in my opinion, is one of their finer moments. There are definite signs of filler here and some tracks that are less than impressive but for the most part `Issues' delivers. Quite frankly with an album title like `Issues' you'd almost expect it to. As has been seen on every album produced by KoRn, issues are something that lead singer Jonathan Davis has plenty of.
`Issues' is something very different than was seen on their previous album `Follow the Leader'. For this album they all but dropped all rap influence and deliver a straight forward rock album.
I remember the first time I heard `Falling Away From Me', their first single off this album. It was eerie and disturbing but complete. I remember thinking that this was the song KoRn was always meant to pen. The introductory guitar work is flawless and embeds itself in the listeners mind. In fact, the singles off this album are probably the strongest tracks here. The second single `Make Me Bad' quickly became a fan favorite. It's catchy and savage. The lyrics are spot on, some of the best Jon has ever written. Along those lines falls their third single `Somebody Someone'. The drumming is superb here. Their forth single is probably the best track on the album. `Let's Get This Party Started' does just that. It's very eerie, very KoRnesque in its sheer mood and temperance. The chorus lines are savage and Jon's vocals are his best yet.
But there is more here than just radio singles.
`Trash' is by far the most disturbing track on the album. It's very twisted (lyrically) yet it works. If you're easily offended (why are listening to KoRn) then you may want to skip this track. If not then indulge in it for it is KoRn at their finest. `Beg For Me' battles alongside `Let's Get This Party Started' for the title of `Favorite Track'. It's brilliantly constructed, from the snare drum introduction to its eerie conclusion reminiscent of that guitar intro for `Falling Away From Me'. I am not a fan of `Wake Up'. It just feels as if KoRn was trying too hard. I adore `Hey Daddy'. It's very different for KoRn and it works beautifully. I love the contrast between the almost bubblegum sounding verses to the brutal chorus. I like `No Way' but it sounds very familiar, like something off `Follow the Leader'. `Counting' is superb, truly a classic KoRn track. The closing track `Dirty' is a decent closing track. Jon's vocals sound much more polished than usual in parts and it made me realize that when you strip away the pain and emotional restraint he applies to his voice he actually has a genuinely nice voice.
Then there is the issue of these `filler' tracks.
These tracks aren't necessarily songs as much as they are interludes. It starts with `Dead', the opening track which enlists the classic Davis bagpipes for assistance. It doesn't seem to fit to me. It's almost too `happy' or `complacent' for a KoRn album and it doesn't flow right into `Falling Away From Me', which it should have. It `really' doesn't mesh well with the flow of the album, which is a shame. I have no problem with interludes or `skit' type tracks when appropriate or when they add to an album's growth. `4 U' is decent for a `filler' but it's still not that great. `It's Gonna Go Away' and especially `Wish You Could Be Me' are annoying to a degree, but they at least carry the right tone for the upcoming tracks. `Am I Going Crazy' is the only `interlude' that I really liked and felt embodied the tone of the entire album.
Minor squabbles aside, `Issues' is a great album. I still feel that collectively `Follow the Leader' is their best album, but `Issues' is far from their worst. Many peg this as KoRn's downfall but I don't feel that to be the case. This is a very strong album that may suffer from a few issues of it's own but rises above them and delivers something any true fan can relish in. |
