I don't know why I'm so interested in dystopian literature, but I am. Interested may be too mild a word. I am fascinated by books with dystopian themes and at least like most of the books I read in this genre.
I listened to House of the Scorpion on audio CD with my two teenage sons. Wow, what an incredible book! I didn't love it as much as I loved The Giver by Lois Lowry, but it was still really powerful. There are so many issues to discuss in this book. My sons were anxious to talk about everything the book presented as well. Words cannot describe the satisfaction I get from listening to or reading the same books at the same time as my kids. I feel it's even more important, not less, as they move into their middle teens. I highly recommend it.
It's really difficult to describe the plot of this without giving too much away. I didn't know much about the book when I picked it out for us to listen to -- just that it was dystopian lit, so I'm hesitant to spill the beans on this one because I loved discovering it `fresh' so to speak. Suffice it to say it's an excellent YA dystopian book, and I will definitely be looking into more of Nancy Farmer's work. |

Matt's Struggles
By Olive Brecht
The House of the Scorpion
Nancy Farmer
380 pp.
The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is a gripping fantasy novel that won't let you put it down. It is about a clone named Matt. With his life endangered he lives secretly with his caretaker Celia in a little house on the border of what was once called Mexico. After a terrible accident Matt suddenly finds himself in the house of a powerful drug lord, the man who made Matt from his own DNA.
In The House of the Scorpion Celia, Matt's caretaker and guardian, has a strong presence throughout the story. Matt wants to come with her to her job and she firmly says no. Celia protects and supports Matt throughout the story. Maria, Matt's friend, is a bossy girl that helps Matt with his problems. She and Matt have a complicated relationship but are still close friends. Tam Lin is a bodyguard for El Patron and Matt. He is an intelligent, strong character and has a surprising role in the novel. These characters help Matt survive.
I heard lots of good things about this book and my friend's recommendation finally made me read it. I thought this book had an amazing ending and that can be hard to come by. Farmer has written many other books. I found that her witting is similar but each book's plot is different. I thought this book was weird, a bit creepy and at points it was hard to follow; nevertheless I loved it. I feel that anyone could read The House of the Scorpion and like it but if you really like fantasy you will enjoy it even more!

I got really excited after reading initial chapters. I thought this books is scifi meets 100 years of solitude (spl. after looking at the family tree). I didn't turn out to be that way. Some aspects of the story were left unexplored. Mr mcgregor, felicia, tom, maria, her mom, political environment in the world, why did maria love the clone so much etc. I would have appreciated even more details about el petron.
The story was really intriguing. But in the end book is just a good read ( a page turner albeit!)
Its not a classic. |
