"A Life Changing Read" | 2009-09-19 |

My first introduction to the concept of the Law of Attraction, wasn't through a book but through my upbringing from religious parents. The concept wasn't so much taught as for attracting your desires into your life as it was a warning of "don't speak things into existence." My parents constantly hammered about manifesting undesirables into your life by speaking them but rarely spoke of manifesting positive aspects into your life. It wasn't until I read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne that I was formally introduced to the concept of the Law of Attraction and its deliberate usage. While The Secret was a good introduction , it lacked specifics on implementation. How does one go about controlling thoughts to bring about positive changes? How do you control your thoughts? The Secret was silent on this aspect. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I was browsing Amazon and one of the recommended books was Ask & It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks. I was "attracted" to this book from the title, as the title is part of a positive affirmation I use from a biblical scripture. Whether it Amazon's remarkable recommendation feature or my own Law of Attraction working to my benefit, I am so glad that I came across this book. It helped clarify some of the less tangible aspects of the Law, and it helped me to better incorporate it into my life. Since Esther and Jerry Hicks were contributors to The Secret (at least the video), I thought providing a comparison would help me clarify in my mind which of these books better addresses the concept.
The Secret:
PROS:
1. Gives a general overview of the Law of Attraction.
2. Provides quotes from credible contributors such as Jack Canfield, Co-creator of the Chick Soup for the Soul Series.
3. Written in clear crisp language that makes it an easy read. The book could easily be read in a couple of hours.
4. Highlights the main points at the end of each chapter with "Secret Summaries"
5. Very inspirational in tone that lends to great thoughts and feeling.
CONS:
1. Very vague in application of the concept into your life. After reading the book, while you're bursting with inspiration, you're left with "what's next."
2. While the book provides quotes from credible contributors, it doesn't provide any concrete real-life examples. I would have liked to see detailed stories on how the Law of Attraction changed lives.
3. Very repetitive. Even though the chapters breakout into different areas of your life, such as health, relationships, wealth, etc., it doesn't provide any new information in any of the chapters. The book isn't long, but it could have been even shorter.
Ask & It Is Given:
PROS:
1. Not only does it explain the general concepts of the Law of Attraction, but it's great in the details. It really brings home the point that the energy we project connects us to the universe.
2. It introduces the point that our emotions are indicators on if we are living to our true non-physical beginnings and are strongly connected to the universe. When we feel good, we are "allowing" the universe to deliver our desires. When we feel bad, it's an indicator that we are closing ourselves to our non-physical beginnings and the blessings that the universe can deliver.
3. It provides 22 "processes" or games that will help you develop the positive thoughts that will manifest your desires into your life. These processes are built upon your emotional health, the higher level processes for when you're emotionally healthy to the lower level processes for when you need assistance in bringing up your emotional health.
4. Very inspirational that makes you feel as if you can accomplish anything.
CONS:
1. The book is written from the perspective of a non-physical "spiritual guide" that Esther channels. For some, this may stretch credibility.
2. It isn't a quick or easy read. Because it is written from the perspective of a spiritual guide, the language is a bit more formal and sophisticated.
3. Repetitive at times. The repetition though can be viewed as a way of instilling the concepts into the readers.
CONCLUSION:
While I enjoyed reading The Secret, Ask & It Is Given is by far the more comprehensive book on the Law of Attraction. It is detailed in its explanation of the concept and it goes much further than the Secret in helping you intentionally and beneficially incorporate the law into your life. A concept can be explained to readers but without detailed instructions or some way of showing how to apply it, it isn't very helpful. Since reading the Ask book, I have noticed some good changes in my life, as I work positive thoughts and a positive outlook. I really enjoy the Magical Creation Box, Virtual Reality, and the Prosperity Game processes. As I develop my skill, I'm sure good things will come my way, and I'll later incorporate these events/occurrences into my review. There may be those who are skeptical of the concept, but I feel that only positive things can come from changing thoughts to uplifting ones. If nothing, you'd be a more happy person. There's nothing wrong with happiness. I've already recommended this book to family and friends and even people I've run across during my day-to-day activities. Ask and It Is Given is a worthwhile read and I give it my highest recommendation.

If you liked the Secret movie, you will like this. Esther Hicks was in the original version of the movie, so you may have seen and heard her insight into the Law of Attraction. If you are ready to go beyond the Secret and like her style, this is a good place to start. I felt it did a good job of explaining the Law of Attraction in way that isn't superficial, yet is easy to understand by the average person. I have read a lot of books on this subject and this one is very clear and thought out. It is long, but flies by. It really helped me to get a grasp on the bigger concepts and absorb the knowledge to where it was just that, KNOWLEDGE, rather than just a belief.
If you don't mind spending a little time to really dig in, this is a good book. If you're looking for more of an overview of Esther Hicks and her beliefs, I suggest the original Secret DVD (not the "extended version") which includes her and her thoughts on the Law of Attraction. |

| In short, the book concludes that as long as you are in a state of mind and being that is ready to receive, you can have whatever you want. Simply stated, the law of attraction (which is universal and is never contradicted) is that whatever you put into your attention on through thought or desire becomes reality. Your emotions are the perfect guidance system, telling you exactly how the law of attraction is working in your life. You will not get what you want if you are not in a vibrational state that matches that of your desire. If you are feeling good about something you want and allowing it to come, it will. You are a co-creator with the "Source" (God, Universal Law) and can shape your life exactly as you wish. Desires marsh into beliefs, and beliefs make us who we are. |

| Chapter 22 alone is worth the price of the three-book set on the "Teachings of Abraham." For that matter, page 114 is worth its weight in Rhodium. But don't skip straight to it! Savor the journey of this book. It can change your life. It has mine, almost beyond belief. |
